Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Applications are invited for a Principal Faculty Specialist position at the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR)/University of Maryland in Rockville, MD. Incumbent will provide scientific program coordination for the IBBR, an institute partnership between the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Incumbent will be familiar with the major program objectives of the Institute and work closely with the Directors to achieve institutional goals. Incumbent will serve as lead scientific program management contact for the NIST cooperative agreement, to include support of program planning, review of federal grant financials, liaison with university partners, support of post doc and early career scientist professional development programs, and scientific and grant reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Serves as point person in support of scientific program objectives, reporting to the Director(s) and working in support of the multi-disciplinary, cross-institution research community at IBBR.
  • Prepares periodic reports, creates presentations as requested. Utilizes evaluation methodology and implements tracking. Analyzes results and recommends appropriate action.
  • Works with the communication team on needs for IBBR web site, highlights and publications that showcases IBBR programs, including participation in the planning and conducting of scientific events including colloquia, retreats, seminars and workshops that enrich the scientific environment of IBBR.
  • Coordinating all aspects of the postdoctoral and early career scientist programs, including but not limited to: Establish program criteria and management with directors, faculty leadership, and human resources; Supporting fellowship applications (F32); Coordinate educational and enrichment programs.
  • Assists Director(s) in identifying multidisciplinary teams within IBBR and fostering submission of pilot and larger scale grant proposals.

IBBR is a joint research enterprise of the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. IBBR leverages state-of-art integrative methods for bioanalytical, biophysical and structural characterization of biomolecules: cryo-electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray crystallography, small angle neutron and x-ray scattering and mass spectrometry. IBBR researchers seek to advance therapeutic development, biomanufacturing, and state-of-the-art measurement technologies, to support accelerated delivery of safe and effective medicines to the public. IBBR is a major initiative and supported in part by the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower) , an initiative designed to achieve innovation and impact through collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • PhD degree required in life sciences or engineering in areas related to structural biology, biophysical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, and/or computational biology.

Experience:
  • Prior experience in a research or research administration environment.
  • Experience building and managing stakeholder relationships.

Knowledge, Skills, and Education:
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills; strong writing and editing skills; strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively with diverse scientific teams; ability to work to a deadline.
  • Ability to operate in a dynamic, complex environment.

Preferences:

Preferred Experience:
  • 3+ years project and/or program management experience on government-funded projects.
  • Knowledge and experience in academic affairs.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possess sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of personalities and constituencies internally and across University campuses in a changing department and office environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to remain flexible, calm, and productive in a fast paced professional environment.
  • Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task a heavy workload delegating work to others as needed.
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions to complex situations and problems.
