Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

A Laboratory Animal Technician Assistant position (20hrs/week) is available at the University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research, Insect Transformation Facility to assist with the care and maintenance of laboratory mice colonies. Duties will include ensuring appropriate care and feeding of mice, cleaning and changing cages, cleaning and upkeep of animal facility, animal facility documentation and communication, maintaining proper temperature, light, and humidity levels, performing routine research related activities such as collecting, measuring and analyzing specimens, transporting and weighing animals, assisting with experimental procedures, coordinating animal care activities with other staff and the University Veterinarian.

The University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research at Shady Grove conducts research and provides interdisciplinary training in molecular genetics of plant, animal and microbial systems, biomolecular structure and function, biomolecular systems and biometrology, and develops new technologies for measurement, analysis, and design.

This position is located at the IBBR Facility in Shady Grove (Rockville, MD).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:
Six months in a laboratory animal facility supporting a research project similar to the type being recruited for.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of husbandry practices as routinely required in a laboratory animal environment.
  • Ability to operate standard laboratory animal equipment including scales, autoclaves, pressure washers, cage washers, steam cleaners, etc.; to lift 50lb bags of feed and bedding; to follow standard operating procedures; to move heavy stainless steelracks, clean cages, etc.; to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Applicants will be required to complete an occupational health survey and cleared by the University of Maryland Health Center for work with animals.

Preferences:

Comfortable working with and handling small animals.
