The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. Stanford's Physics Department is a teaching and research department in the School of Humanities and Sciences.  For undergraduates, we offer Physics majors and minors, Astronomy minors, and other concentrations.  For graduate students, we offer a Ph.D. destination program. 

The Facilities Manager (FM) supervises and leads a team of 5 staff members (Facilities Specialist 1 (FS1) and Facilities Specialist 2 (FS2), Machine Shop Lead, and three Machine Shop team members. This FM is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 3 “Physics buildings”: Varian Building on the main Stanford campus (Varian has a total square footage of 51,426; and 19,598 of that is lab space); Building 60 also on the main Stanford campus; and the Student Observatory located on the Stanford Hills in the same general area as “The Dish”.  This FM will be a key member of the Physics Department Safety Committee and responsible for partnering with Physics PIs to ensure best safety practices in the three Physics buildings.  In particular, the FM will oversee safety training required for all Physics department students, postdoctoral scholars, visiting scholars and researchers, Stanford researchers external to the department who work in departmental laboratories, vendors and service professionals who conduct work in departmental laboratories, faculty and staff totaling approximately 400+ individuals. Such safety training is a prerequisite for card-key controlled building access managed by this FM. This FM will serve as the primary liaison to EH&S, LBRE, H&S Facilities and Capital Planning, and other central office groups to coordinate facility-related activities that impact Physics buildings. This FM will serve as the point of contact with various contractors and construction crews that may be active in the Physics buildings.  This FM also partners with and supports the building and facilities leaders in the Physics and Astrophysics Building (PAB) building which is contiguous to Varian, regarding interface matters.  This FM oversees department computer, telephone, print and copying, audio/visual equipment installed in Physics departmental conference rooms and administrative offices.  This FM is a member of the department managerial team of professionals that lead all aspects of department operations.  

This is a 100% FTE, continuing position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES:

·       Oversee the daily operation and management of assigned facilities and programs, including scheduling and assigning work to staff and coordinating with staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors; coaching lower level managerial staff; overseeing staffing and performance evaluation of assigned staff; contributing to department or division staffing needs forecast.

·       Clarify and resolve problems spanning multiple areas or technical fields and/or oversee or develop programs within assigned facilities.

·       Manage and/or develop a budget for area of responsibility, including staffing, maintenance, contracts, etc.

·       Manage ongoing service contracts as applicable.

·       Participate in department/unit strategic management, including making recommendations involving short-term planning for facility-type projects and for longer-range programs/projects; providing input into long-range financial, budgeting, and programmatic planning and development; providing input into the development of policies and procedures; interpret and manage policies and procedures for assigned area.

·       Oversee and/or monitor project activities; ensure integration with larger unit goals; coordinate with staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors.

*Other duties may also be assigned.


Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in engineering or other appropriate area, physical sciences highly preferred, or combination of technical education, training, and experience. Two or more years of experience managing facilities operations and maintenance staff in an environment with a variety of building types (administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories, residential & dining facilities, auditoriums, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of environmental and safety rules, regulations, and policies. Ability to conduct job site inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated experience managing service contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing, and implementing programs.
  • Ability to interpret planning specifications, documents, working drawings, and related reports.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

·       10 years of experience managing labs in the physical sciences and R&D facilities. Working knowledge in some of the following areas: lasers, power electronics, high vacuum systems, ionizing radiation, complex machinery, mass spectroscopy and other analytical techniques.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
  • May working at heights 4 - 10 ft.

The expected pay range for this position is $109,000 to $149,000 per annum.
