Description

Clemson University seeks a postdoctoral fellow to participate in research and programming for the Black Heritage Trail . This residential fellowship will be awarded for a period of two years, beginning January 1, 2024, and is open to individuals who have met all requirements for the doctorate by the position start date. The application review begins on June 1, 2023, and the job closes on July 31, 2023. 

The Black Heritage Trail Fellow will conduct research and assist with writing text for the interpretative signage, artwork, and South Carolina historical markers that will note sites of significance to Black history on the Clemson University campus. The fellow will also collaborate with an interdisciplinary team who are conducting research on Black history at the university and for the Black Heritage Trail in the nearby cities of Clemson, SC, and Seneca, SC, and will help organize and participate in community engagement initiatives on campus and in the local communities.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Completed the PhD no more than five years prior to position start date
  • Demonstrated research experience in U.S. and African American History
  • Experience teaching in traditional, non-traditional, and workshop settings
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement or restorative justice work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Awareness of the growing movement of universities studying slavery and its legacies
  • Working knowledge of the tenets of public history
  • Ability to share research findings in a way that makes them accessible and useful to the public
  • Demonstrated experience in archival research
