Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work in the fields of thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, and advanced imaging. The overarching goal is for the candidate to aid, develop, execute, and implement novel intravital and intracranial microscopy imaging procedures in support of the laboratory’s mission to understand complex mechanisms behind inflammation, pulmonary infections, lung preservation, transplant immunology, and cancer using confocal and multiphoton microscopy.

Our laboratory has developed multimodal imaging tools and uses sophisticated and state-of the art murine and tissue cultures models to detect immunopathogenesis of allograft dysfunction and rejection. Using contemporary research tools such as single cell transcriptomics as well as proteomics, intravital imaging, and multichannel flow cytometry, in combination with bioinformatics and computational biology, we identify clinically actionable mechanisms underlying tissue injury utilizing models highly relevant to human disease. We follow a team science approach and our research group includes senior investigators from the divisions of thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, and immunology. We have also developed high-throughput services within our group such as next generation sequencing. Our work is highlighted in our publications (Zhikun et al, Science Translational medicine 2017; Hsiao et al, JCI 2018; Reyfman et al, AJRCCM Epub ahead of print; Li et al, JCI 2018; Walter et al, AJRCCM 2018; Akbarpour M et al, JCI 2020; Yang W et al, AJCMB 2021; Kurihara C et al, JCI 2021)

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is creative, an independent thinker and has a proven record of accomplishments and experiences working with challenging biological and microscopy projects who is interested in learning and applying their skillset. Familiarity with one or more of the following will be viewed favorably: fluorescence/confocal/multiphoton microscopy, RNA Scope, image processing and analysis (Nikon NIS, Oxford Instrument Bitplane Imaris, ImageJ, etc.), mouse handling/surgical/injection procedures, and tissue collection.

While experience in the techniques listed above is preferred, not all of the skillsets are required. Since our laboratory provides all training for new recruits. The candidate will also have opportunities to participate in protocol design and data collection related to other imaging-related projects within the Department of Surgery and Divisions of Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Independently and collaboratively plan, perform, and analyze imaging data from animal, multi-parameter flow cytometry, sequencing, and cell culture experiments
  • Work and communicate with internal and external research collaborators
  • To supervise research residents, students, and laboratory technicians collaborating in the experiments.
  • To write, help write, and contribute to publications resulting from research done in the laboratory as well as present findings at national and international meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. Some experience in surgery, imaging/live imaging, immunological, and molecular techniques is preferred. However, we are very flexible on these skills as we will provide all training to the recruit.

Minimum Competencies:

  • Must have good computer skills, including good English language and writing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Surgical and advanced imaging background and experiences
  • Mouse research experience
