Job Description:

The ESL Professional tutor will provide remote and in-person tutoring services to individuals and groups. This position may work at all DCC locations (Poughkeepsie, DCC@Fishkill, DCC@HVR, and DCC@FPC). For this position, we are seeking tutors who have experience teaching and/or tutoring students for whom English is a second language.

This position will report to the Tutoring Coordinator for the Learning Commons. The Learning Commons provides academic support to students that promotes deep engagement with learning materials and fosters an appreciation for curiosity, exploration, and growth. The Learning Commons includes a variety of academic support services (Ritz Library, Math & Science Center, Writing Center, Office of Accommodative Services, Testing Services, and CSTEP).

The primary responsibility of the ESL Professional Tutor is to work with individuals and small groups of students in specific courses or in academic skill areas (e.g. reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, etc.). The ESL Professional Tutor also provides guidance with helping students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to student success. These include, but are not limited to, goal setting, learning strategies, time management, organization, and self-direction. The ESL Professional tutor will also provide guidance to students regarding all academic supports available to provide any needed intervention. The ESL Professional Tutor advocates for student educational achievement to the highest attainable standard, support student goals, and uphold the educational mission of the college.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Tutoring Coordinator, the ESL Professional Tutor will:

Provide in-person and remote ESL tutoring to DCC students, either individually or in small groups.
Participate in, and assist with facilitating, Learning Commons workshops and programming activities.
Assist with data gathering for Perkins grant reporting.
Become knowledgeable about, and adhere to, institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
Seek professional development opportunities related to tutoring practices, student success, student engagement, best practices for academic support, etc.
Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds.
Explain English writing, grammar, and pronunciation in an easy-to-understand way.
Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Manage technology needed to support tutoring programs, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, TutorTrac, and Bookings.
Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students.
Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives.
Additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Earned, or have completed at least 90 credits, of a bachelor's degree in ESL or TESOL, or a related subject, such as linguistics.
Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in a language other than English.
Previous experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction.
Ability to teach learning strategies to students.
Ability to lead small group tutoring sessions.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context as well as flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.
Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
Flexible schedule; ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
Received, or currently pursuing, a master's degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
Experience working with students in a community college environment, preferably in the delivery of academic support services.
Two years of experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction to ESL students.

Additional Information:

Academic support positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Dutchess Community College and Dutchess United Educators (DUE).

The hourly rate range for this position is $25.76 - $30.24.

Employment will require a criminal background screening.
