Summary

The Office of Medical Student Education at the University of Michigan Medical School seeks a Medical Student Academic Advisor to be an integral member of the OMSE - Student Services team.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Services, the Director of Student Services, Medical Student Counselors, and Learning and Accessibility team to implement programmatic strategies that address domains such as academic advising, enrollment, and policies and procedures guiding the medical student experience.  The Medical Student Academic Advisor will be part of a high functioning team supporting the short- and long-term academic and personal success of University of Michigan Medical School students.

Responsibilities*

1.  Service as direct point of contact and provide a myriad of advising and non-therapeutic advising service to medical students, including:

  • Academic Advising. Serve as the primary academic advisor to medical students. Provide personalized support in the areas of curricular enrollment, graduation requirements, academic support, academic requirements, degree progression, academic deadlines, and UMMS and U-M academic policies and procedures. Work directly with Learning & Accessibility team to appropriately triage students in need of academic support and coaching. Partner with Learning & Accessibility team to encourage us of services. Connect student with the Registration and Records team to coordinate and implement changes to enrollment and/or scheduling. Under general supervision of the Student Services Director, will function as an integral member of the Academic Support team to provide the full range of programming and advising that will encourage and challenge students to be responsible for their success as future members of a vibrant, vital profession.
  • Leave of Absence Advising. Provides scheduling advising to students on leaves of absences, such as leaves for research, dual degrees, educational purposes, and/or personal and administrative leaves of absences related to academic performance, health, etc. Works with the student's Counselor and the Senior Registrar to ensure scheduling changes are made timely and in accordance with University and Medical School policies. Ensures continual updates to new and existing medical student leave of absence requests, including monitoring processes to ensure transparency to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Advising Specific to Job Duties.  Establish foundation of trust, identify impact of relationships on academic performance, and provide guidance for adhering to policies and processes of the University and Medical School.  Access and utilize confidential information to provide essential service.  Triage and refer to outside consultation as necessary.

2. Collaborate directly with other units within the Office of Medical Student Education and Medical School. Under the general supervision of the Student Services Director and in partnership with the Senior Registrar, develop procedures and protocols for tracking and reporting student academic progress that align with University and Medical School policies. Where appropriate, intercede or follow-up with students in need of consultation and/or advocate on their behalf. This shall include interfacing with:

  • OMSE Student Services. Financial Aid, Registration and Records, Learning and Accessibility Services, Medical Student Compliance, Faculty Career Advisor Program.
  • Medical School. Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD).

Required Qualifications*

1. Bachelor's degree.

2. At least 3-5 years of relevant professional work experience.

3. Meticulous attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, ability to efficiently multi-task and prioritize, and ability to manage student data.

4. Demonstrated ability to work individually and in a team to accomplish high volume, high detailed tasks within very tight time frames.

5. Excellent interpersonal skills including a positive, responsive customer service attitude.

6. Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, tact and diplomacy to resolve problems including the ability to exercise discretion and judgment in matters of a sensitive or confidential nature.

Desired Qualifications*

1. Experience in academic advising, counseling, or mentoring in higher education strongly preferred.

2. Experience with Wolverine Access MPathways Student Administration is highly desired.

3. Master's degree preferred.

Work Locations

The Office of Medical Student Education operates in a hybrid work environment consistent of both in-person and remote work.  This position will be classified as a flex position which means working on campus 2-3 days per week and working remotely the rest of the week.

Additional Information

Using proper safety techniques, this position will occasionally be asked to move office supplies and hosting materials weighing up to 20 lbs.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
