Compensation Details

Starting salary is dependent on education, directly related experience and internal equity. After completing the second probationary semester, the potential exists to earn additional compensation by teaching overload and spring/summer sessions. This additional compensation varies based on several factors, including educational level and step. For example, a faculty member with a Master’ s degree at Step 0 who teaches 10 hours of overload during the fall and winter semesters would earn an additional $18,000. Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, full-time faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section:

Specific Teaching Assignment:
Faculty member will be responsible for teaching classes in the Dental Hygiene program. The program coordinator is a dental hygiene faculty member who displays leadership, mentorship, and guidance for the faculty of the Dental Hygiene program. The major purpose of this role is to assure that all students progressing through the prescribed sequence of the program courses will receive learning opportunities directed toward accomplishment of the behavioral objectives of the curriculum.
1. Organizes and assists with ongoing assessment, revision, enrichment, development and evaluation of dental hygiene program curriculum with faculty to achieve program goals and facilitate student learning.
2. Conducts dental hygiene faculty meetings.
3. Coordinates program self-study and assists in generating appropriate written materials related to approval and accreditation by outside agencies such as the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Keeps abreast of changes in rules and regulations of accrediting agencies and other official bodies.
4. Acts as liaison between dental hygiene program and community agencies.
5. Assists with assessment of clinical laboratory facilities and learning experiences.
6. Assists Dean in planning, revising and generating class schedules both on campus and in the clinical facilities.
7. Assists Dean in determining faculty teaching assignments according to divisional governance and MEA/CBA guidelines.
8. Assists Dean in forecasting full-time and part-time faculty staffing needs. Assists Dean in interviewing and with the hiring process for part-time faculty.
9. Coordinates student textbook list as submitted by the faculty.
10. Coordinates library reserve lists and book orders.
11. Assists Dean in arranging for faculty substitutes.
12. Provides for advisement and orientation of students entering the clinical courses of the program and assists with advisement of other in-program students as necessary or for those students experiencing academic problems.
13. Provides and coordinates advisement for applicants for readmission.
14. Assists with data collection, interpretation, and reporting relative to the needs of the program, placement of graduates, applicability of courses, attrition rates and related problems, and success of graduates on Licensing Exam and in employment. Develops and implements graduate and employer surveys for data analysis and reporting of results to accrediting bodies.
15. Responds to correspondence related to program.
16. Assists Dean in investigation of program problems and channels appropriately; includes faculty concerns also.
17. Develops agenda for Advisory Committee meetings and recommends replacement members as needed.
18. Participates in annual budget planning process; provides input to Dean for program’s fiscal needs.
19. Coordinates eligibility list for pre-program students.
20. Serves as a resource for students’ class advisors and students when organizing events or other external activities.
21. Works collaboratively with and provides direction for the Support Specialist for the Dental Clinic area
22. Works with Dean to assure appropriate learning experiences including equipment, supplies, and patient care situations are available for student use
23. Provides supervision of student practice in the clinical setting to assure patient and student safety and to prevent unsafe practices by students.
24. Develops, plans for and uses established assessment tools and procedures to assure observation and documentation of student performance.
25. Develops grading policies and procedures with other program faculty to assure students attain  a minimum safe level of practice to be successful
26. Serves as a positive, professional role model for students.
27. Conducts classes in Dental Hygiene theory, laboratory and clinical practice in accordance with program philosophy, objectives and procedures.
28. Reviews and evaluates medical histories of patients to determine appropriateness as clinical patients (if the candidate is DDS or DMD).
29. Provides temporary dental services to patients experiencing sudden problems (if the candidate is DDS or DMD)..
30. Evaluates the clinical performance of students and provides appropriate feedback on their functioning.
31. Conducts classes in, monitors and evaluates clinical radiographic procedures in accordance with program philosophy, objectives and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Faculty are sometimes called upon to perform quasi-supervisory responsibilities, particularly in their role as Coordinators. Interacts with the support specialist for the dental programs regarding clinic supplies and equipment and with the dental office secretary on office support activities and patient schedules.

Minimum Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
1. Master’s Degree in Dental Hygiene or related health care, health education or management field from an accredited institution. A Master’s degree in management must have a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene or a related health care or health education field or a Graduate of a dentistry program with a DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry) from an accredited institution.
2. Current Michigan licensure or eligibility to obtain as a Registered Dental Hygienist (R.D.H.) or Doctor of Dentistry (D.D.S.). RDH must also be certified in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. Candidate must have attained their R.D.H. degree from an institution accredited by the Committee on Accreditation through the American Dental Association
3. At least three years of full-time, recent, relevant dental hygiene clinic experience. If candidate is a dentist, then clinic experience is working directly with dental hygienists.
4. Demonstrates excellent human relations skills.
5. Possess knowledge of the specific subjects to be taught, with background in educational methodology.
6. At least two years of instructional experience in academic clinical and/or classroom teaching experience and at least two years of administrative experience.
7. Evidence of continuing professional development.
8. Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
9. Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
10. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
11. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
12. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
13. Technology Skills: Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
14. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and college objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators; skill in oral and written communication.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
1. Teaching experience at community college level.
2. Familiarity with use of computer-based instruction, distance learning, learning technologies, competency-based instruction and modularized courseware.
3. Member of ADA (American Dental Association) or ADEA (American Dental Education Association).

Unique Aspects of Job:
Fast-paced environment interacting with multi-cultural students with varied educational backgrounds. This position is in a program that receives funding from the Perkins grant; therefore, incumbents must maintain their licensure as a condition of employment. In addition, for clinical requirements, incumbents must keep their health records updated, which includes required immunizations and TB testing, as well as CPR/BCLS certifications.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

1. The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time. S/he is required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
2. S/he must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversations, face-to-face conversations, or written documentation.
3. The employee must be able to utilize all programs on a computer independently and efficiently (particularly the internet, Word, and the student database).
4. S/he must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
5. Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the dental industry. Must be able to handle and mix compounds or chemicals properly and safely and to wear appropriate latex, vinyl or latex-free gloves and other personal protective equipment.

Work Schedule

Although full-time faculty are obligated to teach during fall and winter, the nature of their full-time job requires them to perform many of their professional responsibilities year-round.

Faculty are required to maintain office hours and will make additional provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable.
