Position Description
The Assistant to the Chair (ATC) provides high-level administrative and organizational support to the Chair of the Department. The ATC is expected to exercise independent judgment during performance of duties and to handle materials of a sensitive or confidential nature. As this position requires frequent and substantive interactions both within and outside the University community, using good judgment, tact, and discretion are necessary parts of the job. The ATC must be able to develop a thorough knowledge of University and College policies and an understanding of Department administrative and business activities.

The ATC serves as the primary contact for all faculty-related issues with Academic Human Resources and College of Engineering Human Resources, and will oversee and manage all aspects of faculty searches; appointments of tenure-track, research, postdoctoral and visiting faculty; and promotion of tenure-track and research faculty. The ATC is responsible for processing all visa requests for academic personnel, and managing the orientation process for exchange visitors and new faculty. Independently and in collaboration with other university offices, plan and manage special events.
