Description
*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis. USGS Office/Lab and Location: A postdoctoral research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC). The participant should be available for 20-40 hours per week. The opportunity location is remote. The USGS mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable intelligence at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers. As the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, USGS collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides science about natural resource conditions, issues, and problems. The National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC) manages a network of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) located across the U.S. Together, the National and Regional CASCs conduct research to understand how changing climate conditions impact fish, wildlife, ecosystems, and communities. Through this work, we aim to provide on-the-ground natural resource managers and other stakeholders with scientific information and decision-making tools to help them understand, respond, and adapt to these changes. Research Project: Science communication and translation is central to the CASC mission of delivering actionable science to natural and cultural resource managers. These efforts ensure that scientific information is accessible, understandable, and relevant to the needs of natural and cultural resource managers. Science communication and translation fosters internal efficiency and organization, strengthens external partnerships, puts information in the hands of the audiences who need it, and broadens the reach of CASC science. This fellowship will help to ensure that CASC research achieves on-the-ground impacts that can inform effective natural and cultural resource management decisions. The selected participant will conduct an assessment of the program’s online science communication and translation activities. The participant will identify areas for improvement and gaps in the CASC’s communication activities and will propose and implement solutions to improve the program’s effectiveness at translating CASC science to stakeholders and the general public. The participant will collaborate closely with other CASC communications experts to research and develop guidance on options for evaluation of science communication and translation efforts, both written and visual, and will assist with the implementation of evaluation strategies and metrics. The selected participant will gain real-world experience in science translation and communications at a federal science agency. The participant will collaborate closely with CASC federal and university researchers and staff from across the country to expand the scope and effectiveness of NCASC communication efforts and devise and implement strategies for effectively communicating the results of CASC research to a wide audience. Key audiences include state, federal, and tribal natural resource managers, Congress, and senior leadership with the USGS and the Department of the Interior (DOI). The fellow will collaborate with the science communicators at the USGS and the regional CASCs to develop strategies and approaches that extend the reach and awareness of the CASC program. These communication professionals will also serve as mentors and advisers on how to apply science communication principals to natural and cultural resource management. Learning Objectives: Through this research and interactions, the fellow will have the opportunity to refine their knowledge of science translation in the fields of climate impacts and adaptation and will gain valuable experience in supporting communications and outreach activities for a federal program targeting a diverse network of organizations, including federal, state, university, and other non-governmental entities. Mentor: The mentor for this opportunity is Kate Malpeli (kmalpeli@usgs.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year but may be extended for up to four more years upon recommendation of USGS and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time, or part-time, and is negotiable (20-40 hours per week). Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend based on education and experience. Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USGS. Participants do not become employees of USGS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Questions: If you have questions about the application process please email USGS@orau.org and include the reference code for this opportunity.
