Job Description


The Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Research Scientist, working in Assistant Professor Irina Zhuravleva’s research group. The primary responsibility for this position involves conducting theoretical research on the physics of galaxy clusters and intracluster medium in support of current and future X-ray observations. Research topics include the physics of AGN feedback, gas sloshing and turbulence, and the microphysics of ICM. Developing tailored models that will support data analysis of XRISM targets will be a large fraction of the project. Besides conducting research, the Research Scientist is expected to present results at conferences and help prepare grants and reports on their research.

Expected project length is 1 year with possibility of reappointment. The expected start date is October 1, 2023.

Qualifications

Required:

  • a PhD in physics or astrophysics;
  • at least three years of postdoctoral experience;
  • experience in developing HD/MHD simulations using common codes in astrophysics (e.g., Arepo, Flash, Enzo, Pluto, etc.).
