The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is offering a postdoctoral fellowship to support the AFRL 711 Human Performance Wing (711 HPW), Airman Biosystems Division, Product Development Branch, Enroute Care Section (RHBAM) in their research collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The successful candidate will conduct scientific research at the UMB Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR Center), a world-class, multi-disciplinary research and education center focusing on critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety and injury prevention.

What will I be doing?

• As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to strengthen your skills in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and physiology.
• Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. The research group is currently seeking a highly trained and motivated postdoctoral fellow to join their Translational Research Program to investigate the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and microRNA-mediated innate immune signaling in 1) brain injury, 2) acute lung injury, 3) coagulopathy in trauma and sepsis. These translational projects involve both humans and mice.
• The research group consists of two junior faculty co-investigators, two research specialists, one clinical research assistant, and one program administrative assistant. The principal investigator has over 25 years of experience in the study of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of sepsis, traumatic injury, and ischemic myocardial injury.

• AFRL is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

• Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

About ORISE:

• This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. The qualified candidate will have a PhD or MD with 2-4 years of research experience in molecular/cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and immunology. Additionally, the ideal candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills and independent ability to design and execute experiments. Candidates must have received their degree within five years of the appointment start date and must not have more than five years postdoctoral research experience.

Highly competitive applicants will have two or more first authored, published reserach manuscripts, and education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

• Molecular biology techniques (including Western blot, Cell culture, ELISA, Flow cytometry, RNA/DNA extraction, qPCR, RT-PCR)
• Animal handling (specifically mouse handling)
• Excellent communication including data analysis and interpretation
• MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator
