Position Summary

The Department of Classics and Humanities, the Department for the Study of Religion, and the Jewish Studies Program at SDSU conduct the full range of normal departmental activities, and the Administrative Support Coordinator's duties pertain to three distinct areas, each of which has its individual policies, precedents, and procedures. This Administrative Support Coordinator provides support for the faculty as well as direct office lead responsibilities for the one-person office.   The Administrative Support Coordinator’s position is supervised by the department chair and the program director. Their work should be carried out within the policies set by the departments and the chair. These responsibilities include the following: planning and overseeing budgetary and fiscal matters, facilitating the faculty Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) process, course scheduling, processing paperwork for faculty appointments, interpreting academic and administrative regulations and policies, gathering data, assisting committees, hiring and supervising student employees, and assisting with academic and non-academic personnel matters.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Department of Classics and Humanities has seven full and part-time faculty and two postdoctoral research fellows. Classics embraces all of ancient Greek and Roman civilization but especially Greek and Latin literature; Humanities is the interdisciplinary study of literature, language, history, philosophy, religion, and the fine arts. 

The Department for the Study of Religion has nine full and part-time faculty members. The Department employs critical analysis and methods from a variety of disciplines to understand religious traditions as well as to examine the doctrines, stereotypes, and prejudices that may surround those traditions. 

The Jewish Studies Program hosts a Visiting Israeli Scholar annually along with several visiting Israeli lecturers who teach in a variety of disciplines. The Jewish Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to teaching a broad range of topics related to Jewish history, religion, and culture from the biblical through the modern period.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite. 

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience working with budgets.
  • Experience creating flyers and newsletters.
  • Experience coordinating administrative support functions for a group.
  • Experience with data entry and updating database records.
  • Experience working at special events.
  • Experience working with an employee management system such as PeopleSoft, My.SDSU, or other relative system.
  • Experience in the professional use of digital and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,505 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,505 - $5,508 per month.
