Job Summary

The Department of Community Health and Prevention at the Dornsife School of Public Health is seeking a postdoctoral fellow interested in the social determinants of health, places and health, and urban health more broadly, including applying community-based participatory research approaches to urban health inequities.

The Fellow will work primarily with several large, place-based initiatives in West Philadelphia, utilizing data collected in the conduct of research and evaluation activities in order to produce scholarship that both supports these initiatives and contributes to scientific literature related to place-based initiative evaluation and community-led systems change. These initiatives include the US Department of Housing and Urban Development-designated West Philadelphia Promise Zone, the US Department of Education-funded West Philly Promise Neighborhood initiative, the US Department of Justice-funded Byrne Criminal Justice Initiative, and the many community-based programs and organizations that they support. The goal of each of these initiatives is to improve the health, safety, economic development, and/or educational outcomes of children, adults, families, and communities in West Philadelphia by creating/enhancing place-based systems of support for community residents. As a result, these evaluation studies have collected a multitude of multilevel data that describe social determinants of health at the individual and neighborhood levels, as well as participant experiences in and outcomes of initiatives. There is also data and the opportunity for additional primary data collection related to community resident researchers’ experience with these initiatives.

The Fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty at the Dornsife School of Public Health engaged in a range of community-engaged research projects and community-led interventions throughout Philadelphia. Although the fellowship will focus on analyses and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, there will be opportunities to also produce brief reports for broader dissemination to community and policymaker audiences.

  • Presenting results at scientific meetings developing new research ideas.
  • Actively participating in collaborative research team and center seminar.

  • At least 1 year of relevant experience
