Description
The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (post-doc) for a 2-year period with experience in aquatic data synthesis/analysis and riverine food web ecology. This position will provide analytical support for a multi-agency, watershed-scale restoration effort in Meadow Creek, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River in NE Oregon. To adequately assess the effectiveness of restoration, an inventory of the physical and biological characteristics prior to restoration is necessary. This project will support a post-doc to synthesize, categorize, and analyze fish, aquatic invertebrate, habitat, and environmental datasets collected over the last several decades in the Meadow Creek watershed. These datasets will provide a framework from which to conceptualize outcomes of future floodplain and process-based restoration actions. Analysis of existing datasets will require a variety of tools and approaches, likely necessitating time series and spatial analysis along with parametric and non-parametric statistical testing. The goal will be to evaluate how in-stream habitat and biota have changed over time and in response to previous restoration and management actions, providing a platform to understand the effects of ongoing and novel floodplain restoration actions that are planned for the Meadow Creek watershed. The post-doc will work as an integral member of CRITFC’s River Ecology group, a division of the Fishery Science department. The mission of the River Ecology group is to evaluate salmonid and stream ecosystem response to conservation measures and environmental stressors in the Columbia River basin. This position will include some flexibility to determine the best approach to analyze the available data and to be involved with other research projects that CRITFC, USDA Forest Service, or other basin collaborators are working on. The position will also include a limited amount of field work to gain first-hand knowledge of the Meadow Creek riverscape and collect physical or biological data as needed to adequately describe pre-restoration conditions. CRITFC offers competitive compensation and an exceptional benefits package, including medical, dental, 401(k), 12 days of vacation (to start), 13 paid holidays, and paid sick time. We provide professional development opportunities, promote from within, and have a Native hiring preference as part of our commitment to our people. CRITFC fosters a work environment that supports and inspires our shared goals of protecting the natural world and the tribal cultural connection to it. Responsibilities: • Synthesize and archive existing physical and aquatic-biological datasets for the Meadow Creek watershed. • Perform data analysis using appropriate time series, spatial, and statistical models and techniques to assess current status, trends, and effects of past restoration on selected physical and biological parameters. • Produce peer-reviewed publications of key scientific results. • Participate in inter-agency workgroups, as necessary. • Provide technical advice and reviews in the areas of food webs, fish-habitat relationships, and statistical modeling to CRITFC, USDA Forest Service and other collaborators associated with the Meadow Creek project. • Conduct field work along with CRITFC and/or USDA Forest Service staff as needed to gain first-hand knowledge of Meadow Creek and neighboring watersheds and fill data and knowledge gaps in our understanding of riverscape processes in Meadow Creek. Field work may include field tours, snorkel surveys, fish sampling, invertebrate sampling, and water quality sampling. • Other duties as assigned and as appropriate to CRITFC and USDA Forest Service goals and purposes. Supervision Received/Given: The incumbent is co-supervised by a Senior Fishery Scientist with the River Ecology division at CRITFC’s Fishery Science Department (Principal Investigator) and a Research Fish Biologist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station, USDA Forest Service (Co-Principal Investigator). Working Conditions: This position will be based out of CRITFC’s Portland, Oregon office. Up to 8 weeks per year may be spent in the field near La Grande, Oregon where a CRITFC field station is maintained. There will be opportunities to attend regional meetings, conferences and workshops. CRITFC offers a hybrid telework policy requiring a minimum of two days per week spent in the Portland office. CRITFC Motor Vehicle Policy: This job requires driving a CRITFC vehicle or your own vehicle for business (mileage compensated), and therefore you must be able to meet the terms of the CRITFC Motor Vehicle policy. Per the policy, applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years. This includes a three-year record clear of the following: • Reckless Driving • Driving Under the Influence • Suspension or revoked license • No more than two at-fault accidents • No more than one major violation or two minor violations. Native Hiring Preference CRITFC implements a tribal preference policy and encourages citizens and descendants of our member tribes (Nez Perce, Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Yakama) and other federally recognized tribes to apply. CRITFC is committed to building a culturally inclusive community and a work environment that respects and inspires every person. Members of historically marginalized groups including women, people of color, those with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, those who have served in the military, and members of other underrepresented communities are invited to apply. Ready to Apply? Please submit a cover letter, two writing samples, and a CV/resume for consideration.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in stream ecology, fisheries biology, ecology and/or a related discipline • Expertise in river ecology and aquatic biota. In-depth understanding of the biology, ecology, and conservation issues of salmon and other fishes of the Columbia River Basin is preferred. • Highly competent in statistical analyses with application to analysis of environmental/ecological data. • Highly competent in conducting spatial analyses and visualizing data using a geographic information system (GIS). • Strong record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals. • Strong record of effective written and oral communication skills. • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop, guide, and work within inter-disciplinary teams. • Proficiency in database management, archiving, and data sharing among partners. • Experience collecting field data in riverine ecosystems (e.g., fish habitat, fish sampling, nutrients, primary productivity, stream metabolism, fish diets, stable isotopes, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrate prey).
