Job Summary

The Coordinator for Student Leadership Development leads five programs for Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) students to practice and enhance leadership skills. This role aligns the Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement programs with SLCC’s student learning outcomes, providing training for students as emerging leaders within their communities. Primary functions of this position include travel and event planning; planning and hosting trainings; program promotion; recruiting, selecting, and coaching student leaders and co-advisors; managing budgets, and collaborating with internal and external partners. The long-term success of this role is measured by program engagement, effective campus partnerships, and fulfillment of student learning outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Alternative Breaks:
  • Coordinate fall and spring break projects both locally and across the United States. This may include identity-specific and student at-large breaks (e.g., Latinx & Hispanic, disability, gender and sexuality-based breaks).
  • Follow institutional policies and procedures for student and staff travel, including planning with risk management and purchasing departments.
  • Recruit, select, and supervise student peer leaders and volunteer advisors, mentoring them in the planning and execution of Alternative Break activities and trips including identifying relevant service topics for each trip.
  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for the program aligned with the strategic plan and educational outcomes of the institution & department.
  • Collect, synthesize, and share learning-outcome based assessment of external leadership programs and use data to assess relevancy and/or redundancy.
  • Upon onboarding, complete annual from “Break Away” training about thoughtful community engagement.
Student Leadership Retreats:
  • Coordinate biannual Student Leadership Retreat for student leaders across the institution.
  • Manage conference logistics including marketing, travel details, lodging, contracts, activities.
  • Work with staff to assess student leadership development needs at the college.
  • Perform outreach to key partners at SLCC (Office for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA), Orientation and Student Success, TRIO and PACE programs, Academic Advising, Institutional Equity, Inclusion and Transformation, Admissions, Career Services, and Athletics). Recruit student leaders from each department to participate in student leadership retreats.
  • Liaise with vendors and community partners needed to execute the contract.
  • Develop a strategic plan and evaluation tools for both conferences.
External Leadership programs:
  • Coordinate annually with a Leadershape facilitator on travel, event promotion, and learning assessment logistics for Catalyst and Institute retreats for SLCC students.
  • Oversee the NSLS chapter at SLCC and coordinate with an NSLS representative on contract renewal, onboarding of SLCC students into the program, maintenance of students in the program, and oversight of NSLS student leadership.
  • Meet with campus partners to assess leadership development needs within their offices by identifying and sharing relevant leadership development opportunities.
  • Collect, synthesize, and share learning-outcome based assessment of external leadership programs and use data to assess relevancy and/or redundancy.
Thayne Center Leadership Series:
  • Collaborate with a team to plan and host student leadership development workshops for the general student body.
  • Collaborate with a team to build relevant training through workshops directly tied to learning outcomes.
  • Identify relevant campus sites and times to host workshops to maximize the number of SLCC students who can participate.
  • Build learning outcomes for each workshop that are based in institutional and Thayne Center learning outcomes.
  • Develop and implement various marketing strategies to recruit student attendees.
  • Identify facilitators for each workshop. Co-facilitate workshops if appropriate.
  • Ensure that each workshop is set up appropriately for each facilitator.
  • Collect, synthesize, and share student learning outcome data.
  • Conduct learning-outcome based assessment of each workshop and use data to rework future workshops and trainings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as education, social sciences, or humanities.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of direct, full-time, paid experience in related area such as student activities, student leadership, service-learning programming, civic engagement, community organizing, and/or volunteer management.
  • Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement.
  • Part-time experience may be substituted for full-time experience on a pro-rated basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field, such as education, social sciences, or humanities.
  • Direct experience coordinating educational programs.
  • Direct experience with service projects and community partners.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual.
  • Must have strong knowledge of and proven experience with:
    • Student Leadership Development theory and practices, working with college students.
    • Advising strategies in context of student clubs, organizations, and student leadership.
    • Assessment – designing, implementing and measuring learning outcomes.
    • Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural – how we can ensure our work reflects these values.
    • Technical specialties – basic promotional design skills, event and logistics experiences.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of student leadership development theories and practice models.
  • Knowledge of risk and liability surrounding student travel.
  • Proven skills in program coordination, including project management, needs assessment, strategic planning, institutionalization, evaluation, critical thinking, and budgeting.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including tailoring communication to different constituents.
  • Strong decision-making, problem solving, and collaborative partnership skills.
  • Strong organization skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Strong computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, Zoom, and other telecommunication platforms.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and accurately in a team setting, meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to partner with community organizations, non-profit agencies, and social change stakeholders.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, form committees, and work well as an inclusive leader in a collaborative team environment. Flexibility and ability to adapt quickly.
  • Ability to strategically build relationships and connect with campus partners.
  • Ability to ascertain the risk and liability surrounding student travel.
  • Ability to work together with internal and external partners to arrange safe student travel following college travel policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the college.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties

May occasionally be required to work evenings and/or Saturdays as determined by student programming needs.
