Job Summary

The Williams lab at UCSF’s Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology is a multidisciplinary team that focuses on bacterial macro molecular communication. The Williams Lab merges, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) single molecule reconstruction, with biochemical, genetic, and in vivo studies, to address fundamental issues in the physiology of bacteria. We are seeking a lab manager to join our growing team.

The successful candidate will be expected to manage the day-to-day operations of the lab which includes but not limited to, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies and stocks, overseeing equipment maintenance, managing chemical inventory, keep reagents organized and ensure the adherence to safety standards and biological compliance protocols, perform general lab maintenance of laboratory stocks of DNA, protein, and bacteria strains; keep financial records; prepare stock solutions, plates, and media; monitor equipment maintenance, cleaning staff, safety training, ensuring safety compliance, and lab member performance; and perform other duties as assigned.

In addition to daily lab operation, the candidate is expected to have a strong background in the use of standard techniques of molecular biology as well as exposure to Microbiology and Structural biology and assist with setting up experiments in bacterial molecular communications. The successful candidate should be independent, work successfully within and or with several different teams, and should have excellent communication skills.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) is a basic science department within the School of Medicine and performs specific research and training. CMP provides administrative and financial services to 15 core faculty members, 22 staff, 16 non-faculty academics, 37 postdoctoral scholars, and 21 graduate students.


Required Qualifications

SRA I: 

  • BA/BS in natural sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, or related science and knowledge of and experience with the basic techniques or methods required by the position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use the internet as a resource for experimental tasks and literature searches
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Math skills required for everyday calculations
  • Capability to learn/use basic statistical tools
SRA II:   In addition to the above
  • At least 1+ years of directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in either protein purification and biochemistry or bacterial genetics
  • Experience using advanced techniques for imaging
  • Ability to effectively use and maintain laboratory instruments such as freezers, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, shaker-incubators, thermocyclers and related instruments
Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with structural biology techniques (cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography)
  • Experience using advanced technologies for imaging
  • Ability and desire to learn new experimental approaches
