Job Summary

Design Editor
The designer’s primary responsibilities will include working under the direction of the course faculty to assist in the design and layout of the print and web editions. Other responsibilities include assisting with workshops, maintaining the Folio and Publication Center websites, and the promotion of Folio and Publication Studies through social media. Below is a description of the specific duties and desired qualifications.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Under the direction of the course faculty:
  • Coordinate design and layout of Folio print and web editions
  • Assist with Publication Studies projects including the chapbook
  • Coordinate selection and editing of art submissions
  • Schedule, advertise and coordinate workshops and events
  • Manage, design, and update Folio and Publication Center websites
  • Manage social media (post announcements & event information, etc.)
  • Report to the course faculty and work 10-20 hours a week
  • Attend all class meetings and participate in class activities and discussions.
  • Attend the Folio and Publication Studies Advisory Board meetings

Minimum Qualifications

  • SLCC student (full- or part-time) or a recent graduate of SLCC
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign including Knowledge of basic principles and elements of design specifically related to typography and page layout
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Some ability to work with HTML, CSS or web platforms
  • Interest in visual and multimedia arts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have taken ART 1230 Typography & Layout or demonstrate equivalent skills
  • Have taken ART 1200 InDesign or demonstrate equivalent skills (suggest either have taken or be concurrently enrolled in ART 2200 Advanced InDesign)
  • Using layers
  • Parent pages and text flow
  • Working with type using paragraph & character styles
  • Working with objects and graphics
  • Manual preflighting
  • Using color
  • Understanding bleed
  • Creating accessible documents
  • Packaging
  • Understanding print production and file creation
  • Knowledge of visual and multimedia arts
  • Have taken ART 2440 Web Site Design or demonstrate equivalent skills
  • Experience with Squarespace
  • Experience with audio and video editing

Capable of communicating effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, Ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
