Summary

The Education Director upholds the mission of the University of Michigan Medical School to transform health through bold and innovative education, discovery, and service.  Contributing to the University's mission to strive for excellence in clinical care, research, and medical education, the Education Director adheres to and ensures departmental compliance with the organization’s Code of Ethics and relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

With oversight and direction from the Vice Chair of Education and the Program Directors, the Education Director is responsible for the financial management of the accredited medical education training programs (fellowship, residency, and/or clerkship). The Education Director must possess strong leadership and personnel management skills and is expected to develop unique knowledge of the ACGME and Program Requirements, policies, and procedures. Additionally, the Education Director has comprehensive and detailed understanding of policies of the American Board of Surgery and its specialties, GME, and the Rules and Regulations of the House Officer Association Contract.

The Education Director serves as an important liaison to Program Directors, coordinators, learners, faculty, other staff members and will continually assess and direct a wide range of programmatic issues including: long range schedule planning, recruitment processes, administrative workflow, databases, communication with faculty and trainees, and management of internal and external program relations.

The Education Director reports directly to the Chief Department Administrator.

Responsibilities*

Administration:

  • Provides support to and meets regularly with the Program Directors concerning general administrative issues including scheduling
  • Provides leadership for a dynamic education team which requires an understanding of the credentialing, recruitment, licensing and certifications, scheduling, and knowledge of the student programs
  • Participates in regular program improvement meetings for the residency programs
  • Works with external departments in the development of the annual departmental rotation schedule

Budgets & Financial:

  • Monitor and report on the GME training program budgets
  • Oversee research funding for residents in Academic Development Training
  • Oversee purchasing for the education office and residency programs including equipment and supplies for the trainee wellness program

Communication, Outreach, & Recruitment:

  • Assist with quota review, ‘rank list’ entry, and certification in the National Residency Matching Program
  • Oversee the use of technology to enhance the recruitment process and coordinate virtual and in-person interviews and visits
  • Maintain the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and oversee its processes during recruitment season for all training programs
  • Oversee communication from prospective trainees and applicants and triage as necessary to others within the department, and/or in other hospitals or departments

Human Resources:

  • Oversee trainee verification status and activity
  • Manage education office employee performance evaluations and feedback

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Interpret and apply policies of ACGME, other national accrediting agencies, and GME to support compliance

Trainee Support:

  • Provide emotional support to trainees, as needed
  • Establish relationships and serve as liaison to external hospitals, internal departments, and divisions regarding trainee, orientation, affiliation agreements, and external rotations and rotators

Supervision:

  • Serve as liaison to all program coordinators in the Department of Surgery
  • Interview, guide, and train new coordinators
  • Supervise and provide mentorship/development to education staff members
  • Review education and administrative projects and timelines
  • Coordinate cross-training of educational staff positions
  • Perform other duties, as needed

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years of prior management and supervisory experience
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proven leadership ability to take initiative, assume accountability for processes, delegate work, and manage personnel
  • Ability to coordinate multiple competing demands and deliver work in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build collegial relationships and work with faculty, residents, students, and staff at all levels
  • Ability to use independent judgment to search out appropriate course of action within the context of University of Michigan and ACGME policies and standards
  • Proven ability to assess and handle highly confidential matters
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 2 years of work experience within graduate medical education
  • Understanding of ACGME polices and procedures, especially those related to surgical specialties
  • Familiarity with University of Michigan policies, procedures, Wolverine Access, and Concur

Work Locations

This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department.  Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
