Job Summary

The Director of STEM Learning Support Services is responsible to organize effective learning supports in math and science at all levels from basic through advanced coursework; providing access to learning aids; facilitating interactions among faculty members, advisers, students, and tutors; organizing workshops and lectures to support student learning and career readiness; assessing the impact of learning supports on student learning and completion; and finally, to develop robust connections with the community to bring information about STEM careers and career readiness to potential students.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• The Director must clarify, communicate, and implement the department’s vision, mission, guiding principles, goals, and expectations.
• Acting as the primary spokesperson for assigned staff, the Director works with the College administration, peer institutions, the community, and prospective students in the critical areas of student support and retention in STEM.
• The Director must proactively facilitate professional teamwork among faculty and staff members in order to achieve the desired vision and mission as the best skills, knowledge, and attitudes of college employees are implemented in a collective effort to achieve that end.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree
Three (e) years of work experience in an institution of higher education.
Demonstrated understanding of the mission and role of a comprehensive community college.

Preferred Qualifications

Management experience with supervisory responsibilities
Experience with Banner and/or Cognos.
Demonstrated experience building effective outreach and communication strategies

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• The Director must work in collaboration with senior leaders to set vision, mission and strategic goals and to champion those within the department
• The Director provides leadership to promote inclusive and equitable support and retention strategies.
• The Director establishes and promotes a positive learning and workplace culture across the department, meets regularly with faculty, staff and students to assess effectiveness of the department, provides support and encouragement, constructively solves work-related issues, identifies and supports innovative practices.
• Coordinates the assessment and review of the services offered in the department and leads development and implementation efforts of new support services.
• Manages the department budget in compliance with college guidelines and direction.
• Uses data to make informed decisions about department operations and provide reports of outcomes.
• Has a commitment to keep the College accessible to a diverse urban population and values personal, cultural, economic and ethnic diversity.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
• Has the ability to lead, direct, and manage departmental personnel, and utilizes the evaluation systems to assure successful job performance by faculty and staff.

Special Instructions

This is an interim position. The estimated start date is July 1, 2023 with an approximate end date of June 30, 2024. The opening for the ongoing position may be modified in the future depending on changing needs of the institution.
