What We Want

The Technician I will be responsible for supporting the Organic Teaching Laboratory Program by assisting in planning and supervising technical operations. The Technician I will also provide training and oversight for student workers assisting in preparation and distribution of chemicals. What You Need to Know

Salary: $13.01 to $16.72 an hour

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment

  • Ensure attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work non-standard hours

 

Responsibilities:

  • Chemical Processing: Updates and maintains chemical mixtures recipe book; assists in quantities of chemical preparations needed for individual experiments and total course; provides oversight for student workers preparing standardized chemical solutions and mixtures; coordinates student workers in keeping laboratories supplied with basic materials and necessary chemicals; assists in supervision of hazardous waste consolidation, labeling, and disposal for Organic Chemistry Laboratory Program.

  • Chemical Logistics: Assists in maintaining inventory of laboratory chemicals and standard items and supplies. Assists in determining specifications for purchase of chemicals for organic teaching laboratories.

  • Laboratory Security/Safety: Assists in securing organic laboratory facilities at end of classes; examines chemical preparation area and procedures for hazards and recommends corrective action; assists with new employee safety orientation and Hazard Communications Awareness for student workers.

  • Department's Hazardous Chemical Waste: Assists Technical Laboratory Coordinator in chemical waste collection Departmental Hazardous Chemical Waste facility. Ensures accurate segregation of classes of chemicals, and proper identification tags are on each .  Works closely with the Technical Lab Coordinator and the University s Safety Officer to ensure Departmental Waste Facility is in compliance with Federal, State and University policies and regulations. May transport placarded hazardous material in department vehicle and perform other duties as assigned.
