What you need to know

Job Summary:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is responsible for conducting multiple research projects and studies on highway embankments and slopes, advanced unsaturated triaxial testing, transient and steady-state seepage, ground improvement works using geosynthetics in transportation infrastructure, field instrumentation and monitoring, and application of geothermal energy for bridge deicing.   The Postdoctoral Research Associate will assist in conducting various research tasks in multiple projects on the above-mentioned topics.  Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Required Education & Experience:

  • PhD in Geotechnical Engineering

  • No prior work experience

Essential Duties:

  • Processes and analyzes data. 10%

  • Performs suction-controlled advanced unsaturated triaxial testing. 10%

  • Field data collection from sensors, and processing to perform condition assessments of civil infrastructure assets. 10%

  • Performs experimental studies on geosynthetics in the laboratory. 10%

  • Performs coupled numerical modeling of heatflux for bridge deicing using FEM or FDM software. 10%

  • Disseminates knowledge by preparing presentations and webinars to stakeholders involved with different projects. Prepares technical reports, guides, research papers and articles. Assists with writing proposals. 10%

  • Delivers the reports and datasets generated from the projects to the funding agencies. Writes and publish journal articles based on the results of completed studies related to material testing, condition assessment, and numerical findings. 10%

  • Prepares competitive proposals for external funding agencies. 10%

  • Assists the PI in conducting various research tasks for multiple research projects. 5%

  • Assists PI with managing project tasks. Supervises student and graduate workers. 5%

  • Performs transient and steady-state seepage and ground improvement works of transportation infrastructure. 5%

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 5%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years engineering related work experience.

  • Unsaturated soil mechanics background.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals and principals of geotechnical engineering.

  • Thorough knowledge of the of suction-controlled advanced triaxial testing and other suction-controlled geotechnical tests.

  • Thorough knowledge of geosynthetics and its applications.

  • Strong knowledge of FEM/FDM or related software.

  • Strong written and strong oral skills with thorough knowledge of scientific publication background.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: SURE

  • Strong knowledge on slope stability studies.

  • Basic understanding on the applications of geosynthetics and geothermal for transportation infrastructures and field monitoring works.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform common office functions.

  • Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.

  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
