Position Summary

A full-time postdoctoral Research Associate position in structural health monitoring is available in Dr. Mahmood Haq’s group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan State University. Dr. Haq’s research seeks to design novel, lightweight automotive structural components using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. These FRP composites will further integrate RF antennae, structural health monitoring sensors and design them for ‘inspectability,’ ‘maintenance,’ and ‘re-assembly’.

The NDE Research Associate will be a key member of a cross-disciplinary team that aims at integrating innovations in structural health monitoring techniques for non-destructive evaluation of FRP composites materials and multi-material assemblies. An ideal candidate should have expertise in ultrasonic and optical techniques. Expertise in numerical modeling of wave propagation in materials is preferred. In addition to performing research activities on existing research grants, the candidate is expected to assist in writing proposals.

Dr. Haq will work closely with the successful candidate in a collaborative lab environment to develop the project and help the trainee achieve their career goals. The appointment will be initially for one year with the possibility of additional years based on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.
