Job Summary:

The Yen Laboratory and the Small Animal Metabolic Phenotyping Facility of the Department of Nutritional Sciences are seeking a highly motivated Scientist to lead research projects studying the roles of the intestinal lipid metabolism in regulating systemic energy balance using genetically engineered mouse models and to co-direct a shared-use metabolic phenotyping facility. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the laboratory's research program and will provide scientific inputs on experimental design, data analysis, and result interpretation to the metabolic phenotyping facility. The selected candidate would demonstrate enthusiasm for multidisciplinary research and working with diverse investigators, a strong interest in learning and teaching new techniques, and the ability to thrive in an inclusive and collaborative environment. Involvement in these activities is expected to lead to scholarly work that will be published in scientific journals.


Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and prepares and/or presents results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 10% Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures
  • 25% Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision
  • 15% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 10% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 20% May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit as needed
  • 10% Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Education:

Required
PhD in Chemical or Biological Sciences


Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated experiences in
- conducting postdoctoral research
- managing a research laboratory and/or shared-use facilities
- working with undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers
- studying lipid metabolism using molecular, biochemical, and in vivo techniques
- working with mass spectrometry to analyze bile acids and other lipids.
- managing mouse colonies
- working with large data sets and bioinformatic analyses of RNAseq and microbiome profiling data.
- designing, performing, and analyzing metabolic phenotyping experiments
Expertise in the following techniques:
- Molecular biology: genotyping, subcloning, DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, western blot
- Imaging: immunostaining, confocal imaging and other microscopes
- Biochemistry: lipid extraction, enzymatic assays for bile acid and various metabolites.
- Mass spectrometry: bile acid and lipids quantification
- Protein purification: overexpress protein in various organisms and protein purification using FPLC system
- Cellular work: cell isolation and culture, immunostaining
- Software: R, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Prism, MS office


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Minimum $57,880 ANNUAL (12 months)
