The Research Autopsy Collaboration and the laboratory of Dr. Sidd Jaiswal are seeking a Life Science Technician 2 (LST-2) to join our programs in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University.

School of Medicine employees who are patient-facing, work in, or frequent clinical and hospital areas for work purposes are considered as healthcare workers.  This position is considered a healthcare worker and will need to comply with the Stanford Medicine vaccination requirements including the primary series of COVID 19 vaccine.

About the Labs:

The Research Autopsy Collaboration obtains unique organs and tissues postmortem for immediate release to researchers in cancer and systemic disease, as well as to create a program biobank. Participating patients agree to donate organs and tissues upon their passing and samples are taken at autopsy after death.  The RAC currently collaborates with over 30 research groups in cancer and other diseases and supplied tissues are used for growth of cell lines and organoids, genetic sequencing, and numerous other types of research investigation.  Our program provides a unique service to donors and supports ground breaking research, providing opportunities for career advancement in its reach and flexibility.  Please visit https://med.stanford.edu/racs.html to learn more about our program. The Jaiswal laboratory studies the molecular basis of aging related hematologic disorders, with the ultimate goals of developing novel treatments to prevent blood cancers and other diseases of aging.  The group includes research staff, students, and postdoctoral fellows who work collaboratively towards these goals. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who is highly organized and who possesses the social skills to interact with a wide range of clinical and scientific staff.

About the Position:

The LST-2's duties will be split between the Research Autopsy Collaboration and the Jaiswal lab.  For research autopsies, he/she will assist with specimens at research autopsies during the day as well as on nights and weekends.  He/she will be responsible for sample organization and processing, and tracking and annotation of biobank specimens. Opportunities to participate in sample dissection and further evaluation will be available. The LST-2 will also work in the Jaiswal lab on processing tissues obtained from autopsies, as well as be involved in the maintenance of the mouse colony and assist with maintaining lab supplies in conjunction with other staff.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in basic laboratory techniques
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
  • Tissue Sectioning
  • Cell Culture Skills
  • Comfort with handling rodents
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet programs such as Excel or Google Sheets

Education & Experience (REQUIRED):

Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the scientific discipline a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (REQUIRED):

  • Must be detail-oriented and able to keep accurate records of experiments.
  • General understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

Additional Physical Requirements:

The ability to respond to night and weekend research autopsies within agreed upon time intervals is required.

Working Conditions:

Work occurs in an autopsy suite and a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required. Will be required to attend at least some research autopsies taking place at night and on weekends.  

Due to the nature of the work, the position will be fully on-site.

Additional and/or Unusual Working Conditions:

Participation in autopsies with transmissible infectious diseases may be necessary and all safety requirements including personal protective equipment use must be followed.

The expected pay range for this position is $33.14 to $39.89 per hour. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
