Summary:

The Director of Graduate School Communications reports directly to the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and works in close collaboration with the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education, the Director of Student Services for Graduate Admissions and Enrollment Management, the Manager of Postdoctoral Affairs, and the Director of DEI and Career Planning in the Graduate School. The incumbent closely collaborates with the Student Collaboration Center and provides editorial leadership for the university-wide Professional and Graduate Bulletin which is critical, not only for archived and current graduate program requirements per the Veterans Administration, but also for prospective students interested in Temple’s graduate programs. The incumbent is responsible for collaboration with the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communication in the development of graduate programs advertisements. The incumbent develops new and editorial updates to the Graduate School’s website, forms, handbooks, advertisements, recruitment materials, etc. The incumbent works closely to uploading and maintaining new and current forms.

The incumbent establishes/updates the policies and procedures for the Dissertation/Thesis Handbook in addition to ensuring the Temple Community (i.e., doctoral students, faculty, and staff) adhere to all policies and procedures involved with culminating experiences for doctoral students. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the elevation of doctoral students for candidacy including the initial review of academic graduate record benchmarks, reviewing and certifying the sponsoring and examining committee members per Graduate School Policies and Procedures , and completeness of the dissertation proposal all of which are required prior to doctoral students registering for dissertation credits; and, leading the Graduate School Dissertation and Thesis Format Review Team for the review of the final submitted dissertations and master’s theses prior to submission to ProQuest.  This candidate provides workshops for and individual meetings with graduating students concerning dissertation and thesis format (e.g., in FY2020, 2021, and 2022 there were 302, 358, and 331 dissertations and theses reviewed and submitted to ProQuest, respectively ). The incumbent is responsible for providing the Registrar’s Office with the list of doctoral students eligible to graduate and the final titles of their dissertations for the student’s transcripts.

The incumbent attends and takes detailed minutes at all Graduate Associate Deans and Graduate Board meetings. The incumbent manages and updates, as needed, the lists of graduate faculty (i.e., those eligible to chair a dissertation, those eligible to chair a practice dissertation, regular graduate faculty, and adjunct graduate faculty). The incumbent manages the annual university-wide Graduate Board elections.  The incumbent is a member of the leadership team to ensure quality forward-thinking graduate student educational experiences and career planning across the University, develop communications for new graduate education initiatives, and provide outreach to the directors/coordinators of graduate programs. Required Education & Experience:

Master’s degree and at least three (3) years related experience in graduate education and/or manuscript writing/editing. A terminal degree is preferred.  Computer experience including: Word, Access databases; Excel spreadsheets, and Canvas, or other student learning modules.

Proven record of effective program development/communication for higher, graduate or professional education. Demonstrated experience with student academic development, graduate research opportunities and student awards/scholarships. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:

* Demonstrate the ability to be detail oriented to assure the accuracy for required program information for the Professional and Graduate Bulletin . 

* Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty and administrative staff.

* Demonstrate expert knowledge of developing and editing a variety of types of documents including advertisements.

* Demonstrated communication skills for interactions with both domestic and internationals students for understanding format requirements of dissertations and master’s theses. 

* Ability to influence without authority to create good team dynamics.

* Be able to manage a team project and mentor others.

* Ability to work nights and/or weekends and travel to off-campus locations, as necessary.

* Ability to travel to locations outside of the greater Philadelphia area for graduate student recruitment, as needed.

 

Preferred:

* Familiarity with student information systems, preferably Banner and Recruit.

* Demonstrated leadership in graduate recruitment.

* Experience with Pivot tables.

* Experience in designing PowerPoint presentations and webinars.
