What we want

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will participate in an NSF funded project on “Synchronizing Decision-Support via Human- and Social-centered Digital Twin Infrastructures for Coastal Communities”. Coastal flooding and storms present a growing global challenge. This SAI project focuses on strategies, technologies, mechanisms, and policies for increasing coastal community resilience. The project centers on the use of digital twins – virtual copies of physical objects and systems that update in real time to match real-world conditions. This research focuses on how knowledge of human reasoning and decision making, governance, and social and cultural processes enables the building and maintenance of effective infrastructure that improves lives and society and builds on advances in technology and engineering.

What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD.  

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in implementation of open-source geospatial platforms involving big-data, visualization, machine learning, statistics, and modeling.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral.
  • Strong programming knowledge with Java, Python, R, and web based spatial tools.
  • Working knowledge with parallel and distributed computing software and hardware architectures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in GIScience, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering or other related discipline.
  • Two or more years’ experience in the following areas: geographic information systems, remote sensing,
  • natural language processing, computer vision, data mining, optimization, and urban simulation.
  • Strong background in artificial intelligence and spatial data analytics.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Project Coordination - Work with team of interdisciplinary researchers to capture, understand, integrate, and implement their requirements in developed algorithms for urban digital twin, as well as contribute to publications and grant writing.
  • Project Research - Conduct urban computing research with a strong emphasis on algorithm development, prototyping, and validation.
  • Project Enhancement - Optimize and transition algorithm prototypes to scalable, parallelized, and robust implementations and may perform other duties as assigned.
