Job Summary

Learning Assistants are expected to attend an assigned section of a math class to assist students with activities, attend paid trainings, tutor students outside of class, attend a weekly meeting with other SLCC Learning Assistants, and attend a weekly pedagogy class. Expected time to be 10-15 hours total per week. Pay rate is $14.50/hour

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

· Attend classes with students to establish connection/bonding with the instructors and the students and assist with classroom activities.
· Provide quality learning assistance to students enrolled in an assigned section of a math class.
· Assist instructors with one-on-one planning meetings to ensure that students are remaining engaged and absorbing material.
· Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.
· Work with students in groups providing support and structure in project-based assignments and work with math manipulative classroom aides
· Teach students study skills, note-taking techniques and test-taking strategies as needed
· Participate in training, development opportunities and other events when available.
· Maintain regular communication with your supervisor and other Learning Assistants


There will also be a required weekly meeting with the instructor and other Learning Assistants.
Learning Assistants can set their own schedule for tutoring students outside of class time.

Minimum Qualifications

Pell-eligible
Permanent U.S. resident or U.S. citizen,
Passed math course in which applicant is applying to be a Learning Assistant or placed into a higher math class,
Must have and maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPA.


Preferred Qualifications

First-generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree),
Applicant will have recently taken the math class in which they are applying to be a Learning Assistant at SLCC,
Applicant has attended SLCC for at least one semester,

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Knowledge of Mathematics through College Algebra.
· Ability to communicate the subject matter effectively.
· Application of different learning strategies, including active learning and peer-to-peer techniques.
· Self-motivation and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
· Empathy for and understanding of the diverse student population in the college.
· Ability to listen and answer questions during interactions with students.
· Great time management and organizational skills.
· Provide support for content and concept understanding, not direct answers to graded work (e.g. homework, projects, quizzes, etc.)
· Be open and available for observations and follow-up conversations.
· Help students learn how to learn the material.
· Help students develop or refine their study skills and become independent learners.
· Demonstrated sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of students seeking learning support.
· Ability to follow written and oral instructions effectively.
· Ability to be flexible in a constantly changing, fast-moving educational environment.
· Ability to perform clerical tasks effectively.
· Ability to work well with others and in a team environment.
· Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
· Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.

Work-study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work-Study program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office. If you do not have work-study awarded to you, you will not be eligible for work under work-study positions.
