About Us

Centralia College is located on a 30-acre campus in the heart of Centralia, Washington and has been serving students in the Lewis County region since 1925. As a comprehensive community college, Centralia College offers academic transfer and workforce programs, as well as adult basic education, ELL, and personal enrichment classes. The college also offers five Bachelor of Applied Science degrees: Information Technology - Application Development, Diesel Technology, Applied Management (Business), Behavioral Healthcare and Teacher Education.

In addition to the main campus in Centralia, Centralia College East in Morton is a smaller site that serves the needs of students in east Lewis County. Since the college is committed to the success of all students, Centralia College also provides educational programs at two corrections centers in southwest Washington - Garrett Heyns Education Center located in Shelton, Washington and the Cedar Creek Corrections Center located in Littlerock, Washington. In addition to Green Hill School in Chehalis, Washington. In total, the college serves more than 7,000 students annually. Job Description

This is a full-time, tenure-track position that reports to the Dean of Student Success and Retention, the Counselor will provide direct services to students regarding academic advising, career exploration, personal counseling, and crisis management, and will represent the office on college wide committees.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting individuals and groups in personal development and career exploration and first-term advising
  • Academic advising of new and returning students
  • Delivering individual personal and crisis counseling by meeting with students and referring them to appropriate on- and off-campus resources
  • Assisting students in college placement and informal transcript analysis as it relates to first-term course placement
  • Supporting student success through retention best practices
  • Training for faculty and staff on best practices for student advising
  • Maintaining a welcoming and efficient office environment including provision of excellent customer service in a fast-paced, multicultural setting
  • Supporting the development of the annual work plan for Counseling and Advising
  • Implementing retention strategies by working closely with faculty, Student Services staff, and other Centralia staff in evaluating and improving retention strategies for students in programs of responsibility
  • Promoting cooperative and collaborative relations between the college, district and community constituents; act as a team player; and demonstrate a strong sense of integrity and acceptance of differing points of view
  • Representing the College at appropriate local, state and regional meetings; serve on College committees and teams as assigned
  • Following counseling best practices and code of ethical conduct
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling; Student Development; or related field.
  • Mental Health Counseling credential.
  • Two years of experience advising students in a college or university setting.
  • Three years of experience providing mental health counseling.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to write clearly and express ideas logically, as well as collect and analyze data, prepare reports, and make recommendations
  • Proficiency in using MS Office software (particularly Access and Excel) and the internet
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a multicultural, diverse student, staff, and community population
  • Ability to plan and manage time effectively, solve problems efficiently using principles of collaboration and continuous improvement, and exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting college policies and procedures. Additionally, the candidate has experience in team building and staff development, conflict resolution, and working within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional office environment.

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, tenure track faculty appointment with employment expected to begin July 1, 2023, subject to state legislative funding. The State of Washington provides a comprehensive benefits package for all state employees.

Centralia College faculty are represented by the Centralia College Federation of Teachers, Local No.4469, AFT/AAFL-CIO.

Compensation
Placement on the established faculty salary schedule is dependent upon education and teaching experience.The salary range for a 177-day contract is $57,265 - $91,124.
