Job Description

ORGANIZATION: BLCK VC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit-organization focused on empowering and supporting Black investors, while increasing their representation in Venture Capital. Their goal is to increase representation of Black investors from 2% of the industry to 4% by 2024. To do this, they coordinate initiatives such as Breaking into Venture, Black Venture Institute, BLCK VC Scout Network, host educational and community events, and work with venture firms to diversify their investors and pipelines. BLCK VC is currently active in the following regions/markets: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. For FY 2023, their annual budget is approximately $1 million.

POSITION SUMMARY: BLCK VC is seeking a self-driven, passionate, and highly competent full-time CEO to develop and lead the vision and strategy of BLCK VC, and also manage the day-to-day operations. The CEO will work closely alongside the full time Chief of Staff, Board of Directors, and the founders of BLCK VC. The CEO will also work alongside leaders within the venture community, partner with other nonprofits in the tech industry, and engage with stakeholders across the ecosystem to build and execute on BLCK VC’s mission and goals.

The CEO of BLCK VC will lead this organization into its next stage of growth as we transform Venture Capital, and the tech industry more broadly, to build generational wealth for Black Americans. The ideal candidate must possess a strong entrepreneurial drive, outstanding communication skills, strong leadership qualities, and good planning and organizational skills. An exceptional CEO will also be passionate about diversity and inclusion, especially as it intersects venture investing and entrepreneurship. They expect the CEO to streamline their organizational operations, effectively and efficiently direct operational budgets, improve revenue, direct the business strategy, and enhance relations with the media, internal stakeholders, staff and surrounding communities.

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The CEO will be responsible for the following areas:

Leadership & Management

· Drive the impact the organization needs to move the needle on social justice for their community.

· Ensure ongoing programming excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications and systems. Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.

· Actively engage and energize BLCK VC supporters, volunteers, Board of Directors, members, committees, regions, partnering organizations and funders.

· Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors. Serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build Board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing local programming and operations as well as for the national and online expansion. Work with Board to recruit new members.

· Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders and other constituents.

· Responsible for the recruitment, employment and management of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers. Ensures that sound human resource practices are in place.

· Develop and maintain sound financial practices. Working with the Board, prepare the budget and see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

· Monitor financial performance and provide regular feedback to Board.

· Together with the Board, lead strategic planning and implementation process of BLCK VC’s strategic plan.

Fundraising & Communications

· Expand BLCK VC’s fundraising strategy and capabilities to meet revenue growth goals.

· Expand and enhance a diversified fundraising program which would include, but not be limited to, major individual giving, foundation, corporate, membership, in-kind and events.

· Management of existing and cultivation of new donor relationships.

· Expand programming revenue generation, and corporate and foundation fundraising activities, to support existing program operations and expansion.

· Expand individual supporters in all geographies.

· Act as the lead spokesperson for BLCK VC.

· Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from online presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

· Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.

Planning & New Business

· Design the regional expansion and execute the strategic planning process for program expansion into new markets.

· Assure the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

· Build partnerships in new geographies, establishing relationships with the entrepreneurs, funders and community leaders at each expansion site.

· Create, implement and evaluate program initiatives that reflect the mission, vision and values of BLCK VC.

· Be a thought leader and expand BLCK VC’s presence nationally through publishing and communicating organizational impact, emphasizing reliable and relevant data that reinforces the importance of diversity in the venture industry.

QUALIFICATIONS: All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching and relationship management experience. Expectations and other preferred qualifications include:

· Track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance and outcomes-based organization and staff. Ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth. A minimum of 10 years of experience with five years of substantial management experience.

· Strong track record of delivering and exceeding operational and financial results, building a superior team and developing strong relationships with external constituencies. Must be able to drive and manage change, be creative and possess a strong desire to win and passion to excel.

· Prior experience investing or advising in private companies as an angel or institutional investor is a plus.

· Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable and innovative approach to business planning.

· A working knowledge of the tech and venture capital industries, along with an understanding of the problems BLCK VC is addressing.

· Demonstrated skill and success in strategic planning, as well as execution of strategic plans.

· Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and effectively manage diverse points of view.

· Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.

· Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

· Proven abilities in working with, and managing, a diverse Board of Directors – particularly in strategic planning, policymaking, fundraising, board development, board committees, etc.

· The ability to engage and excite an audience – large or small – as a public speaker is required, as the CEO is often the public “face” of the organization across existing and emerging channels of communication.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

· Proven ability to fundraise – particularly with corporations, foundations, high profile & high-net-worth individuals.

· A passion for entrepreneurship – entrepreneurial experience preferable but not required. An understanding of the international landscape of entrepreneurship organizations is a major plus.

· Strong marketing, public relations, and relationship building experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

· An understanding of the dynamics of nonprofit fundraising in the is a plus, as is an understanding of the landscape of nonprofit organizations.

· Demonstrated organizational skills and experience in budget management.

· Proven track record of managing staff, including staff development, coaching and mentoring to grow staff into expanding roles and responsibilities.

· Ability to persuade and motivate others, and to gain the respect and attention of the Board leadership and influential volunteers.

· Solid financial management experience to ensure the financial wellbeing of a non-profit organization.

· Experience in working with many active volunteers is a plus.

· Must have proven, strong communications skills, to become the spokesperson and advocate nationally for BLCK VC. Internal communications skills are equally as important.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is preferred. Master’s or MBA is a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The targeted base compensation range is $150,000 to $175,000 based upon background and experience. Bonus potential based upon achieving key performance indicators.
