Precourt Institute for Energy

The mission of Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy is to spark the creativity, collaboration, learning, and leadership needed for the global energy transformation. The initiatives, research centers and programs of the Precourt Institute fund research at Stanford with the potential to solve the toughest energy challenges from science and engineering to policy and economics. The institute disseminates the achievements of the wider Stanford ENERGY community. The institute sponsors courses and a postdoctoral program, and it supports Stanford students interested in energy. The Precourt Institute works with industry, entrepreneurs, and policymakers for the deployment of Stanford solutions, and it engages stakeholders at events like the Global Energy Forum.

Stanford University has close to 300 faculty involved in energy research and education across a wide set of disciplines, from science and engineering to energy markets, finance, regulations and policy. The Precourt Institute for Energy interacts with these Stanford faculty and research scholars to gain unbiased knowledge of energy issues and an early awareness of breakthrough energy technology trends.

The Precourt Institute for Energy is seeking an exceptional candidate to serve as Marketing and Outreach Director to manage and advance the institute’s marketing, outreach, and media strategies for the institute and its respective initiatives and programs. This leadership role will develop and execute on strategic plans for the institute’s communication and marketing objectives, collaborate with leadership on marketing and evolving brand strategy across the institute’s many research and education units under its direction, expand its social media presence including collaboration for podcast productions, evaluate effectiveness for marketing campaigns and improve outreach approaches via email channels and other services, gauge trends to improve marketing tactics, partner with the Doerr School of Sustainability on aligning goals for marketing and branding, support production of consistent and integrated marketing materials such as annual reports and marketing collateral for the institute and its research initiatives and education programs, and lead outreach collaboration processes and management practice. The expectation is the marketing and outreach director will successfully manage broad diverse responsibilities and have strong strategic expertise and problem-solving skills, highly effective relationship development abilities, proficient influential aptitude to work effectively with diverse teams and come to understand what is paramount for the institute. This role will report directly to the institute’s chief of staff, work in partnership with the Doerr School for Sustainability Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, and collaborate closely with the institute’s communication director, other senior institute leadership and broadly with the Stanford Energy community.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, manage, and execute strategic and cohesive marketing plans and strategies to meet the institute’s mission and objectives.
  • Create and manage the execution of an integrated communication approach which leverages marketing and branding strategy, incorporating appropriate channels (i.e., web, print, email, online).
  • Define and conduct market research, including competitive benchmarking, identification of market opportunities, and campaign/program/service/event analysis.
  • Use research results to make tactical decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting.
  • Communicate marketing plans across the institute, its ecosystem, and Doerr School to educate and influence stakeholders
  • Build partnerships with product, service, program, and event managers among other institutes, departments, and schools.
  • Expand the institutes media marketing, including development and coordinated growth of podcast productions among the institute’s many initiatives and diverse programs.
  • May oversee or guide event management to support marketing objectives.
  • Manage key vendor and consultant relationships.
  • Scope and manage project/program budget(s).
  • May oversee interns and other contingent staff; provide staff training.

To be successful in this position, you will need

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior leaders.
  • Extensive knowledge of strategic analysis, customer segmentation strategies and business and marketing planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated marketing strategy and execution across channels including digital, and print.
  • Demonstrated application of market research and data analysis.
  • Excellent project manager with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to senior management.

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Familiarity with the fields of energy and the environment
  • High level of diplomacy and relationship management
  • Familiarity with Stanford University policies, procedures, and systems

The expected pay range for this position is $127,000 to $161,000 per annum / hour.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
