Multiple Postdoctoral Research Positions

UC Davis.

Job Description

The Dickson lab in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology at the University of California Davis School of Medicine is recruiting multiple (3-5) post-doctoral scholars to advance several distinct, NIH-funded areas of research. Successful candidates will enjoy a supportive, diverse, and stimulating laboratory and departmental environment, filled with lots of collaboration, cutting-edge instrumentation and facilities, and a strong culture of training and mentorship.

Recent and ongoing projects from our lab have focused on (i) molecular pathways that are essential for brain development, and (ii) deviant pathways that contribute to neurodegeneration across multiple disorders. We have strong expertise in cell biology / neurobiology, signaling pathways, organelle communication, ion channel biophysics, and lipid metabolism. The projects below offer a very brief overview of the specific research direction(s):

Project 1: Investigates how the protein alpha-synuclein, which has strong links to Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and dementia, alters organelle dynamics and inter-organelle communication to drive neurodegeneration.

Project 2: Investigates the role of lipids and ion channels in regulating neuronal migration during brain development.

Project 3: Investigates mechanisms through which the lysosome controls organelle dynamics in health and disease.

Areas for technical development: For each project noted above we implement multi-scale approaches, including state-of-the-art super-resolution imaging, electrophysiology, optical mapping of brain excitability, novel murine models, molecular techniques, CRISPR editing, as well as proteomics and lipidomics.

Professional training opportunities: laboratory members are strongly encouraged to present their researcheach year at international meetings, departmental symposia, interdepartmental post-doctoral scholar seminars, as well as weekly laboratory meetings held in collaboration with Dr. Rose Dixon’s group. Collectively, these opportunities will sharpen and diversify the candidates’ scientific interests and help develop their local, national, and international research networks.

Work/life balance: UC Davis is a supportive, diverse, and collaborative community, ideally situated in the sunny Sacramento Valley between beautiful Lake Tahoe for winter skiing and summer beaches, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must have a PhD, or MD degree and should have demonstrated a background in neuroscience, neurophysiology, and/or cell biology and signaling cascades
  • Previous experience in at least one of the following would be really helpful: enzymatic isolation of primary neurons, cell biology and cell signaling, patch clamp electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and fluorescence microscopy.
  • The applicant should have a strong publication record, be able to independently design and conduct experiments, be an effective communicator and problem-solver willing to work within a collaborative team.

Successful applicants will be expected to stay abreast of current literature in the field, design and execute experiments, assist in the collection of data for grant applications, and to prepare their results for presentation at national and international scientific conferences and for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

TO APPLY : Interested candidates should email the following items to Eamonn Dickson ejdickson@ucdavis.edu

  • CV/Biosketch
  • Cover letter expressing your interest in the position
  • Minimum of 3 professional references (Name & Email Address)

Salary:

The posted UC salary scales   set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table 23: Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee, Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow, Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct, Fiscal Year . The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $66,909. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience
