(2) REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

a) This position reports directly to: Dr. Matthias Von Herrath (Department Head or Director)

b) This position directly supervises:

                             Admin./Prof. employees 0; Faculty 0; Research & Clinical

                             Fellows/Research Associates 01; Non-exempt Employees 0;

                             Student Employees 0, including PhD students and Master Students

c) This position works closely with other research professors, scientists, research associates/technicians, graduate and postdoctoral fellows at the DRI.

(4) LOCATION:  Diabetes Research Institute, 1450 NW 10 Ave., Room 2011, Miami,

         FL, 33136.

MISSION STATEMENT:  The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) is an international

center whose mission is to bring together leading scientists worldwide to develop and rapidly apply promising research to treat and cure diabetes. 

POSITION SUMMARY: supports the University’s research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES: Applicants at the Assistant Professor should have a Ph.D./M.D. or equivalent degree, at least three years of Postdoctoral training, publications, and a commitment to establish an externally funded independent research program in type 1 diabetes research.  Candidates must also have a proven record as an educator at a higher education institution.  Teaching and mentoring graduate students as well as medical and postdoctoral fellows will be necessary.  Assisting with research in the area of autoimmune and related conditions to include, but may not be limited to, the following

  • Participate in the conduction of translational research , Analyzing data generated including metabolic testing and other protocol related outcomes.
  • Supervise the review of completed applications sent by candidates for translational and basic research conducted.
  • Writing grants and papers in the type 1 diabetes and related autoimmune conditions
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students and visiting scientists
  • Other duties as assigned

Education:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required

Experience:  

Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

Department Specific Functions

Assisting with translational research in the area of autoimmune conditions to include, but may not be limited to, the following

  • Research interests related to immunotherapy of type 1 diabetes, autoimmunity, or infectious diseases. Some areas of interest include antigen-specific targeting for tolerance or immunity, immune memory, immune responses within the inflammatory microenvironment, regulatory T cells, iPSCs, and metabolic and microbiome influence on adaptive immunity.
  • Analyzing data generated including metabolic testing and other protocol related outcomes.
  • Working with multi-disciplinary research team and other PIs, and staff to coordinate autoimmune translational research;
  • Other duties as assigned
