Position Summary

Postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Millman in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research at Washington University School of Medicine. The Millman biomedical research laboratory uses embryonic and induced human pluripotent stem cells for the study and treatment of diabetes. We have a wide diversity of projects involving stem cells differentiation, genetic engineering with CRISPR, disease modeling, transplantation into animal models of diabetes, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, and single-cell sequencing technologies. The ideal candidate should be capable of spearheading and supervising independent projects as well as providing support for ongoing studies in the lab as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a project leader and closely mentors and supervises one or more research technicians and assist them with troubleshooting and optimizing experiments.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research.
  • Assists in the design of research experiments.
  • Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
  • Maintains conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable university policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in university laboratories remain the property of the university.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, engineering or a related field.
  • Strong experience in biology or biomedical engineering demonstrated by publication in reputable journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior research experience with relevance to studying stem cells, cellular biology, and diabetes
  • Experience in mouse handling and surgery and willingness to learn these techniques.
  • Skill in independent analytical thinking, experimental design, troubleshooting, and the ability to effectively communicate with the laboratory staff and investigators is highly desired.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
