Postdoctoral Research Associate, Marine Sciences

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in spatial data analysis, benthic habitat mapping, coastal zone management, and/or marine spatial planning to synthesize existing data (e.g., acoustics, bathymetry, faunal assemblages) and develop dynamic spatial models and data products that will support the management of marine resources in the Long Island Sound.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be supervised by Dr. Catherine Matassa at UConn Avery Point (https://matassa.lab.uconn.edu ) and work with an interdisciplinary team of coastal scientists from UConn, the University of New Haven, and USGS. They will have the opportunity to engage directly with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders (e.g., offshore wind, fisheries) participating in the two-year project via workshops, field campaigns, and development of decision support tools. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will assist with all aspects of field campaigns, lead the data analysis and modeling, assist with stakeholder surveys/workshops, and assist with development of data products and decision support tools in light of the workshop findings.  The researcher will contribute to research and scholarship by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and participating in departmental activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in marine sciences, spatial ecology, or a related field prior to the start date
  • Quantitative skills relevant to the project (one or more of the following skills: spatial modeling, data analysis, GIS)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Oral and written communication skills for scientific audiences
  • Oral and written communication skills for stakeholder and/or public audiences
  • Experience interacting with stakeholders, conducting workshops and/or user group surveys, or similar activities
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research
  • Experience mentoring students
  • Time and project management skills

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date of June 2, 2023, pending Ph.D. certification, with renewal for a second year dependent upon satisfactory performance. The successful candidate’s appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate will be at the regional Avery Point campus of UConn in Groton, Connecticut. The beginning salary range for this position is $56-60K/year, commensurate with experience.
