Position Summary

The Biological Sciences Program at Michigan State University invites applications for a biology education research Postdoctoral Research Associate in developing a curriculum that explicitly supports connections across introductory biology courses. The Research Associate will join a diverse group of educators and discipline-based education researchers working to improve connections between courses in an introductory undergraduate biology curriculum. These courses are focused on supporting three-dimensional learning using evidence-based teaching approaches and are taught by instructional teams made up of faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and undergraduate learning assistants.

Primary Responsibilities include: 1) Collecting and analyzing data to increase understand how students connect structure-properties-function, biological information flow, and evolution when creating mechanistic explanations of phenomena that span introductory biology courses and the instructional strategies that support these connections. 2) Collaborating with BioSci faculty to use research and course assessment data to iteratively improve instructional materials that support students in building connections across BioSci courses. 3) Supporting teaching in BioSci courses through mentored teaching experiences.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Biology or related field


Minimum Requirements

Familiarity with introductory undergraduate biology curricula and experience working on collaborative teams.


Desired Qualifications

Experience teaching introductory biology courses, for example, as a graduate teaching assistant. Experience with qualitative research methods such as coding of student responses or semi-structured interviews. Experience with evidence-centered design of curricula.
