Postdoctoral Research Associate - Algorithms and Visualization

Job Description

Requisition Id 10564

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Digital Manufacturing and Analyses Framework Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking postdoctoral researchers to help with the development of user-facing graphical software and numerical models. Slicing software is one example of user-facing software required for the functioning of additive manufacturing processes. Combined with feedback and controls from the additive manufacturing systems, a broad software package to address these challenges must be developed. One key aspect typically missing from such packages are numerical models for simulation of physical behavior. To that end, the successful candidate will endeavor to develop such models and provide integrated solutions with existing path planning approaches. Such a process requires expertise in multiple computer science disciplines both low and high level with the goal of developing innovative features not previously seen to advance additive manufacturing.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design, development, implementation, and testing of components for software related to manufacturing processes that include:
    • Large scale polymer extrusion systems
    • Electron beam powder bed
    • Laser powder bed
    • Directed energy depositions
    • Large scale metal systems
    • Machine tool systems
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers including mechanical, material, electrical, computer scientists from industry, academia, and other national labs on the development of these systems
  • Help in the development of new and advanced numerical models for additive and subtractive manufacturing
  • Provide solutions for integration of said models into existing path planning approaches
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computer Science or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to assist in preparing reports, proposals, publications, and journal articles
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership
  • The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules and scopes
  • Some activities require export control and/or national security interests, therefore, U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills with high level languages. Specifically, C++
  • Experience in multiple computer science disciplines including but not limited to numerical model design, computational geometry, optimization algorithms, and visualization
  • Previous experience with additive manufacturing software development with an understanding of the AM process and its challenges is a plus
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence)
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.

Moving can be overwhelming and expensive. UT-Battelle offers a generous relocation package to ease the transition process. Domestic and international relocation assistance is available for certain positions. If invited to interview, be sure to ask your Recruiter (Talent Acquisition Partner) for details.
