Position Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Student Services Officer or their designee, the Black Student Success Counselor will participate in the development and implementation of student services/programs, which support and enhance the educational experience for students, particularly Black students. This position works in collaboration to coordinate, up to 0.50 FTE the Umoja-Diop Scholars program, a well-established program designed to enrich and nurture the educational experience of CRC students, with a special emphasis on Black/African American students to be transfer and career-ready. This position also supports campus-wide initiatives aimed at closing equity gaps for Black students.

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: counseling services and/or teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Salary

$55,171 - $94,109 per year. Additional earnings may be available for summer, overload, and stipends. LRCCD Salary Schedules

Additional Salary Information

Initial annual salary within a given range varies, depending upon units/degrees completed at accredited colleges/universities and experience. Candidates not holding the minimum degree requirement may start at a salary lower than posted above.

Assignment Responsibilities

The assignment may include, but is not limited to:
  • Overseeing, planning and implementing the Umoja-Diop Scholars program.
  • Providing proactive counseling support to Black students who are struggling academically.
  • Identifying and supporting student needs to enhance access, success, retention and graduation for Black/African American students.
  • Collaborating with faculty and Student Services to identify and reach out to Black students experiencing academic, social and emotional challenges.
  • Providing culturally responsive counseling, including crisis intervention and personal counseling.
  • Participating in guided pathways case management success teams.
  • Having knowledge regarding trends and challenges facing diverse community college.
  • Providing counseling to support student retention and success.
  • Providing case management and collaborating with colleagues, classroom faculty, and classified staff to support students.
  • Facilitating course planning.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with instructional areas, outreach centers, feeder high schools, neighboring colleges, and community resource agencies.
  • Preparing and maintaining counseling records using current technology.
  • Relaying pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respect the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
  • Assisting students in exploring careers using current technology, in developing an understanding of the employment environment, and in making and implementing career decisions.
  • Assisting students in exploring four-year college transfer options, in understanding transfer agreements and transfer degrees, and in making sound decisions related to transferring.
  • Administering assessments and inventories to groups or individual students and interpreting the results.
  • Providing counseling for issues impacting retention, persistence, and academic success of diverse populations, and referring students to resources as appropriate and necessary.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling; OR hold a bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); OR hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR the equivalent.* All degrees must be from an accredited institution, completed by December 31, 2023.
  2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
