Executive Director, Diversity, Equity, & Belonging (DEB) and Strategic Initiatives - (230000HW)
  
The University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine is seeking an Executive Director, Diversity, Equity, and Belonging. for the Office of  Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) and Office of Postdoctoral Scholars (OPS).  This will report to the Assistant Dean of the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) and Office of Postdoctoral Scholars (OPS).

Essential Functions:

  • Develop strategies, programs, initiatives, and assessment protocols to help GPILS and OPS measure and achieve its Diversity, Equity, and Belonging (DEB) goals.
  • Assist with strategic planning and fostering institutional effectiveness, with a particular focus on DEB.
  • Prepare institutional data for high-level planning and assessment related to diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Produce outcome/impact reports for the GPILS Advisory Committee and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic guidance for recruitment of underrepresented groups in biomedical and population science to Graduate programs and postdoctoral positions.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team for GPILS/OPS.
  • Manage events and projects that the DEB Office launches.
  • Develop and implement curriculum and presentations designed to advance outcomes associated with GPILS and OPS core values on diversity and equity issues.
  • Provide strategic guidance and learning to faculty, postdoctoral trainees, and students on promoting trainee engagement, learning, development, and programming.
  • Represent GPILS DEB Office and work with campus partners including UMB IMSD Program, on activities relating to the advancing of the mission.
  • Cultivate partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, professional associations to promote and highlight best practices, and other efforts focused on advancing diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Work with students, staff, postdoctoral trainees, and faculty workforce, and develop best practices for engagement and retention.
  • Continuously listen, work with constituents across campus in the community, and globally to continually assess the diversity and inclusion landscape.
  • Co-chair and manage GPILS/OPS DEI Taskforce.
  • Serve as member of the SOM senior leadership team for the UMB IMSD T32 training program.
  • Represent GPILS on various committees and work groups.
  • Manage operating budget for GPILS DEB Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, such as dissecting climate surveys data and GPILS program data to increase student retention, improve graduation rates, trainee retention, and improve lab work environments.
 

Qualifications

  
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant field or a related DEI field. Master’s or doctoral degree preferred.
Experience: Seven (7) years spent progressively building a background in equity, diversity, or inclusion, organizational culture effectiveness, or leadership development, preferably in an academic setting that includes at least five (5) years of experience in workforce or academic-related diversity, equity and inclusion, social justice, or related fields.
Supervisory Experience: Five (5) years of managerial/leadership experience.
Other: DEI certificate or equivalent strongly desired.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Demonstrated problem solving, project planning and implementation skills.
  • Exceptional writing and public speaking skills.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of organizational and strategic plans that incorporate clear strategies that align with institutional goals.
  • Proven ability to research and prepare executive-level documents, reports, and summaries.
  • Proven ability to handle highly sensitive issues that require sound judgment, strict discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Able to foster relationships with co-workers, university stakeholders, and others to advance institutional equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 
Hiring Range: $121,000 - $145,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
