Job Summary/Basic Function:
Brazosport College, a two-time Top 10 finalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and Achieving the Dream Leader College, seeks a dynamic and innovative individual to advise students. This grant funded position reports to the Director, Counseling and Testing and performs tasks that may include, but are not limited to:
  • Counsel and advise students concerning educational, vocational/career plans;
  • Provide information to current and potential Brazosport College (BC) Adult Education &Literacy (AEL) students concerning registration procedures, testing requirements, career, job opportunities and academic advancement opportunities;
  • Provide advising support for AEL students and refers them to the Office of Student Wellness and Basic Needs as needed;
  • Provide follow up to ensure barriers are being addressed;
  • Address retention and maintain post service tracking;
  • Assist students with appropriate referrals to resources;
  • Provide aptitude, interest, and achievement test to aid student in developing an educational pathway;
  • Provide students with information regarding available resources within BC/community;
  • Make presentations and interact with high school, college and/or community representatives to implement special programs and events;
  • Understand and discuss FERPA guidelines with students;
  • Understand federal and state policy and procedures as applicable for the grant;
  • Complete administrative duties including detailed record keeping, maintaining data, and preparing reports as needed;
  • Supports student success initiatives for the department;
  • Participate in AEL and advisor/counselor meetings to maintain knowledge of current practices or updates;
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
  • This position is contingent upon grant funding and satisfactory performance. Maximum of 19 work hours per week. Variable hours.
Physical Demands:
Able to traverse campus; vision, hearing, talking, lifting, carrying, fine dexterity, handling, foot control; and ability to drive to off campus locations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications for this position are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Behavioral Science, Counseling, Social Work, or related fields;
  • Experience in working with diverse individuals during a period of significant transition and connecting them to support resources for a variety of needs inside or outside of an academic setting, coaching, or supporting students;
  • Experience in advising, educational planning, and career exploration;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal, documentation and organizational skills
  • Computer and audiovisual equipment competency;
  • Ability to get along with others, foster an environment where diverse populations feel valued;
  • Other qualities, experiences, and skills that enhance one’s value to the institution.
