Overview: 

The Transportation Analytics & Decision Sciences (TADS) Group within the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Postdoc Researcher in transportation analysis and modeling. The TADS Group assists the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and other federal agencies in developing solutions to national transportation problems. TADS researchers conduct spatial and statistical analyses, build applications and models, and carry out engineering and economic analyses of issues pertaining to the transportation sector. This position will primarily support a multi-disciplinary effort that heavily focuses on freight and passenger transportation systems, estimation of fuel consumption, modeling, big data analysis, as well as developing data tools.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct and report complex assignments related to transportation data analytics, travel forecasting, as well as using various transportation datasets - e.g., Freight Analysis Framework (FAF), National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and many others - to estimate freight and passenger movements and to examine travel behaviors.
  • Conduct spatial and statistical analyses; estimate highway and non-highway fuel consumption; develop interactive data tools; perform assessments of energy and mobility issues pertaining to the transportation sector; and address operational, technological and system analysis subjects related to freight and passenger travel.
  • Collaborate with other researchers on projects that develop and utilize models of the transportation network, in support of an improved understanding of the transportation mobility system.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and disclosure of appropriate R&D activities. Working with R&D staff to develop, prepare reports, publications, and journal articles based on ongoing research.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Civil/Transportation Engineering, or related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • A background/experience in freight and passenger planning and transportation systems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in modeling, simulation, and development of applications/tools associated with people/goods movements.
  • Strong understanding and working experience with data on the movements of energy commodities, transportation network data, spatiotemporal analysis, etc.
  • Proficiency in the use of analysis and modeling tools (e.g., Python, R, SAS) and competence in programming with Geographical Information System (GIS), such as ArcGIS and QGIS, as well as web/data tool development (HTML/JavaScript), is a strong plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, or presentations at national meetings, are expected.

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
