Associate Research Scientist

Job Description

About the Opportunity

Summary:

The Northeastern University Experiential Quantum Advancement Laboratories (EQUAL) – located at its Innovation Campus at Burlington, MA, invites applications from highly qualified individuals to fill an Associate Research Scientist (ARS) position. EQUAL is a world-class experimental and computational research facility, equipped with MBE, PVD, XPS, ARPES, PEEM, Scanning NV magnetometry, and other synthesis, microscopy, and spectroscopy instrumentation. The tools include cryogenic capabilities and are powered by data science and machine-learning algorithms to accelerate research.

We seek exceptional applicants in the broad area of quantum materials and device research. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year upon demonstration of satisfactory progress. The project will involve (but is not limited to) the development of new thin film and 2D quantum materials and their heterogeneous structures, demonstration of their fundamental properties, and development of sensing devices and applications. The types of materials include topological, magnetic, superconducting, and 2D materials, and other materials that become topically important during the project. The research will involve working collaboratively with other experimental, theory, and data-science groups. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop and establish themselves as a scientific leader in quantum materials and devices.

The successful candidate will be involved closely with the commissioning of the facilities at the EQUAL lab and get trained to operate multiple instruments. They will perform guided and independent experimental research of significant complexity, learn and develop new techniques, and collaborate closely with other groups as required by the project. They will supervise graduate and undergraduate students, help others perform experiments at the EQUAL lab, and write grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications. They will also be expected to work with teams to deliver reports and other deliverables in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or an equivalent field, and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience (although exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered), with evidence of research leadership demonstrated through publications and presentations at recognized venues. Candidates experienced in the synthesis of quantum materials using molecular beam epitaxy and DC/AC magnetron sputtering; device fabrication, cryogenic temperature experimental characterizations; Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and various surface-probe techniques such as AFM and STM will be given preference.

Additional skills: Experience with one or more of the following skills is also desirable: Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM); transmission electron microscopy (TEM); e-beam lithography; Python, LabVIEW, and Solidworks.

Applicants should submit their complete resume including the names and contact information of three references, and a brief research statement outlining their accomplishments and future interests. The search will commence immediately and remain open until the position is filled.
