Department Purpose


The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology, & Behavior (NPB) is an academic unit whose mission is to conduct research and provide teaching under the College of Biological Sciences. The units consist of Senate and non-Senate faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, teaching assistants and student assistants.

Job Summary


Under general direction of the Chair and CAO, as well as the IT Director for the College of Biological Sciences, architect, implement/integrate, automate, manage, operate, and maintain a complex set of information systems, applications and infrastructure to support business and research needs of the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology & Behavior (NPB). Perform duties of domain/network/database/systems/security administrator and application developer. Develop backup, disaster-recovery, and business continuity plans. Create and maintain documentation for systems maintenance and modifications. Implement and support a virtualized server environment, migrating physical server systems towards virtualized server workloads. Program and configure rulesets for firewalls and security appliances. Analyze NPB’s business and research needs and processes to identify solutions and process improvements. Design and implement such solutions and improvements, including metrics to assess performance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays for system emergencies and maintenance.
  • Valid California Driver’s license to transport materials and equipment.
  • Work in area where there is constant traffic and frequent interruptions.
  • Position requires on-site of the Davis campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:   

  • Valid California Driver’s license.

Minimum Education/Experience:         

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS X, and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with management of virtualized computing environments.
  • Experience in advance troubleshooting/problem solving for hardware, software, network and related computer systems, and handheld and peripheral devices. This includes service installation, configuration and operation for directory, authentication, authorization, file, database, backup, enterprise antivirus, enterprise software update, web, and web application services.
  • Experience with computer networking and security, including VLAN management, firewalls, routing, VPN, monitoring, and vulnerability scanning.
  • Experience authoring both internally- and client-focused documentation, including systems documentation (e.g., operational procedures) and user training (e.g., how-to" documents).

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skills to organize work effectively to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort appropriate among the projects, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and to resolve complex issues with both non- technical and technical clients

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:         

  • Experience working with and connecting to high performance computing environments.
  • Experience working at a large research University
  • Experience and knowledge of UNIX-based operating system environments, including their security requirements.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Familiarity with ITIL or other IT Service Management (ITSM) methodology.
