What We Want

The Senior Research Instrumentation Specialist will oversee the daily operation of the Department of Chemistry's scientific machine shop. The Specialist will provide support in educational and research developments of the university. This position will also provide support in the application of skills to design and fabricate metallic items. The selected candidate will design, construct, modify, repair, adjust, and maintain all types of scientific metallurgy for instructional and research applications. What You Need to Know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Eight years in repairing, operating, and maintaining scientific instrumentation, to include some supervisory experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of spreadsheet, and database applications

  • Oral and written communication skills

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate life science or engineering field of study

  • Three years of supervisory experience in a scientific machine shop in a customer oriented setting

  • Five years of experience in the design, construction, modification, and repair of precision instruments

  • Management experience and experience with instrument engineering

  • Training and knowledge in all aspects of metallurgy including management and teaching abilities

Responsibilities:

  • Scientific Machine Shop Apparatus: Oversees the daily operation of the Department of Chemistry's scientific machine shop. Determines the optimal design and construction or repair of scientific instruments and devices. Constructs what functions the apparatus is to perform. Responsible for knowing the scientific/engineering principles involved and having extensive knowledge of the properties and limitations of the raw materials and construction methods to be applied. Independently determines the best methods to use.

  • Scientific Techniques: Uses a variety of machining tools, lathes, mills, hand and power tools, cutters, etc. Fabricates parts and constructs device or sub-assembly. Uses sophisticated heliarc welding techniques in constructing ultra-high vacuum chambers. Uses other welding techniques on different types of scientific equipment. Instructs and supervises others. Uses a variety of sophisticated test equipment to ensure that instrument or device performs appropriately.

  • Management: Delegates work assignments and ensures timely completion of projects. Supervises/instructs lesser-skilled personnel. Maintains inventory of raw materials kept and notifies appropriate personnel of re-order necessity. Oversees computerized on-line work order and billing system.

  • Final Product: Works closely with service personnel in other support/service shops to ensure that the final product can integrate all sub-assemblies. Consults with faculty and staff on selection and testing of new equipment. Installs completed product into existing device or assembly, which may require field installation techniques and apparatus. Restores damaged or defective devices and parts and performs other duties as assigned.
