Postdoctoral Research Associate - Characterizations of Cr-coated Zr Alloy Tubing

Job Description

Requisition Id 10471

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on coating performance of Cr-coated Zr alloy tubing in the Nuclear Fuel Element Performance Group, Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy System Directorate (FFESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research related to hydriding, oxidation, ductility evaluation, and characterizations of non-irradiated and irradiated Cr-coated Zr materials. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the gas hydriding and steam oxidation tests at high temperatures, neutron scattering and radiography experiments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) or Spallation Neutron Source, process data from the 3D neutron images, perform ring compression testing of the steam oxidized specimens. It is also anticipated that a successful candidate will perform neutron imaging and scattering study of neutron irradiated materials.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct hydriding and oxidation experimental work at high temperatures with Cr-coated Zr alloy cladding
  • Perform neutron scattering and imaging experiment of the non-irradiated and irradiated Zr alloy specimens, and process the data
  • Perform the post-quench ductility study of the non-irradiated and irradiated Cr-coated Zr materials
  • Support mechanical testing of irradiated Zr alloys in radiological work areas
  • Produce publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years. Applicants must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment
  • Experience with mechanical testing or coating performance under extreme environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of materials science and mechanical testing methods.
  •  Experience with use of beamline user facilities (e.g. HFIR, SNS, APS, NSLS-II, etc.)
  •  Strong ability/aptitude to contribute to proposal writing and publish journal articles.
  •  Expertise in microstructural examinations with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
  •  Experience with programming software, such as LabVIEW and MATLAB.
  •  Experience with characterization or performance analysis of nuclear reactor cladding materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
