The Master's in Development Practice (MDP) seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate focused on sustainable food systems development in the southeastern US. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will join interdisciplinary and multi-institutional projects using qualitative research to understand the impact of farmers market organization and management on farmer economic viability and quality of life.

 

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be mentored by Dr. Hilary King, MDP Associate Director, who has teaching and research interests in international development, political economy, sustainable food systems, and mixed methods research. Through their research, the individual will mentor talented graduate student research assistants, engage with research stakeholders, and guest lecture in classes. The PRA will undertake a wide range of complex research duties. Their technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise advances research programs. This includes organizing, coordinating, and planning operations including finances, human resources, and communications.
A strong work ethic, ability to work independently, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work on multiple fronts and in a fast-paced environment are key to being successful in this position. Occasional short-term travel for research purposes and presentation of research findings, may be required. This may occasionally require working outside of typical working hours, including evenings and weekends.


Candidates should have a PhD in the social, environmental, agricultural or health sciences. Demonstrated qualitative research experience is a must, with a preference for candidates who have experience working in U.S. agricultural systems. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the start date. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Research (50%):
• Responsible for managing complex research projects, including tool design, IRB development, submission and revisions, and other research activities.
• Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, assists in the planning and development of research instruments, guidelines and procedures to collect required data.
• Actively contributes to the development of research protocols. Determines how research methodologies or tools must be modified.
• Analyzes data, identifies data discrepancies, and researches and identifies causes. Will perform qualitative analysis of appropriate data and statistical analysis of numerical data.
• Conducts and contributes to literature reviews related to research projects.
• Contributes to data collection as necessary, particularly in training team members in data collection best practices.
• Ensures that study data and systems are maintained and accurately documented.
Project Management (40%):
• Manages the research team, including research assistants, overseeing quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.
• May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development.
• Coordinates various aspects of the study, scheduling/training people to schedule, communicating with outside stakeholders, etc.
• Coordinates and facilitates weekly meetings and presentations of the research team.
Teaching and Program Support (10%):
• Develops and delivers training materials for members of research project teams (can be related to research) to ensure the quality of the research.
• May provide MDP program support, potentially including participation on the internal admissions review committee, mentoring current students, undertaking discrete research projects, possible teaching, and other duties as assigned.
