E COLLEGE

Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle. Port Angeles is two hours from Seattle and a one-hour ferry ride to Victoria, Canada. The College is honored to serve six sovereign American Indian nations in the region: Jamestown S’Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Quileute, Makah, Hoh, and Port Gamble S’Klallam.

The College is honored to have strong relationships with these six federally recognized Tribes in the College’s service district. The College is home to Longhouse of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse. It is the first Longhouse in the nation to be built on a community College campus. The College offers transferable Indigenous language courses in Klallam/S’Klallam, Makah and Quileute and Hoh languages. Instructional programs include a Tribal Homeland Security & Emergency Management certificate and an Integrated Indigenous Studies transfer pathway. The College is committed to doing more and taking future direction from the Tribes.

THE POSITION

Peninsula College is recruiting for a full-time, tenure-track History faculty position to begin Fall Quarter 2023. The college is seeking applications from dedicated teachers to provide instructional leadership in the Social Sciences.  Applicants with community college teaching experience and/or experience teaching introductory courses in regional, U.S., and world history are especially encouraged to apply. The ability to teach interdisciplinary courses—especially with an emphasis on indigenous ways of knowing—is also desirable. Position begins September 2023.

We are looking for a dynamic teacher who can communicate effectively with a highly diverse student population.  Primary teaching duties will be World Civilizations I, II, and III; U.S. History I, II, and III; and Pacific Northwest History with the opportunity to develop other courses that align with areas of expertise. Courses are offered in face-to-face, online, and hybrid class environments.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching load of 15 credits per quarter.
  • Ability to teach a spectrum of history course offerings, including World Civilizations I, II, and III; U.S. History I, II, and III; and Pacific Northwest History with the opportunity to develop other courses that align with areas of expertise.
  • Teach classes in a face-to-face, hybrid, evening, weekend, and/or online format at Peninsula College’s main campus and at the satellite campuses.
  • Gather, organize, and/or create course materials that facilitate learning, with a focus on OER/zero-cost materials.
  • Provide expert learning opportunities to students in an atmosphere that promotes learning consistent with college policies.
  • Contribute to the quality and growth of the social science division.
  • Assess student learning in History as part of the annual Academic Unit Plan and college accreditation process.
  • Engage in scholarly activity that complements and informs equitable teaching practices.
  • Work with the Social Sciences Division Chair, Dean, and Vice President of Instruction to develop retention strategies.
  • Advise students on programs and degree planning.
  • Participate in committee work supporting the college.
  • Work with regional nonprofit organizations and community groups to develop successful internships and collaborative learning opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in History or closely related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential.  This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and to communicate clearly with native and non-native English speakers.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Have exceptional teaching skills, with knowledge and use of diverse teaching methods, including a commitment to the use of computer technology in the learning environment, whether in face to face, online or hybrid classes.
  • Have enthusiasm for the subject matter which engages the students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have a doctorate or terminal degree in history, related social science or interdisciplinary field preferred;
  • An understanding of multiple, critical perspectives that consider the marginalization of communities including indigenous, Latinx, Black, Asian, LGBTQ, and other pedagogical practices.
  • Have demonstrated excellence as a teacher-scholar with demonstrated effective teaching and scholarship.
  • Have advising experience and evidence of effective and innovative teaching at an accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education.
  • Have experience in curriculum development, administrative work, or community/student support.
  • Have experience in successfully incorporating technology into pedagogy.
  • Have experience teaching on-line.
  • Have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Have demonstrated focus on student success.
  • Have experience in curriculum development, administrative work, or community/student support.
  • Have demonstrated experience (e.g., professional, collaborative research, policy/programming, etc.) with nonprofit or community organizations.
  • Have experience in collaborative teaching.

Employment Terms

  • A full-time tenure-track position beginning the 2023 Fall quarter; this is a nine-month academic year appointment.
  • The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule in which placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Initial annual salary placement is anticipated to be $56,554 - $59,102 for a standard 175-day contract, depending on qualifications. The current salary rate is expected to increase subject to the outcome of the negotiated Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A standard 175-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June.  Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
