Job Description:

Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic and political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.
 
Healthcare Academic Advisors help students achieve their educational and career goals by working closely with them online and in-person to identify strengths, understand degree and course options and to act as a resource until the student reaches their goal. Advisors are passionate about assisting students as they advance through their academic journey from orientation to graduation and must be proactive to ensure that students are progressing toward their goals by communicating regularly, maintaining records of performance, making connections to available supports and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. Must have extensive knowledge of the institution’s healthcare programs, policies and resources available to students. Ideal candidates will be caring, organized, communicative, and accessible.

General Description of Responsibilities:
  • Discuss healthcare career and educational goals with students online and in-person
  • Advise students on healthcare programs and pre-requisite courses as related to student goals online and in-person
  • Keep abreast of nursing and health technologies curriculum requirements
  • Be a subject matter expert on the various on and off ramps to nursing and health technologies programs
  • Be familiar with multiple admittance paths for students
  • Participate in advisor training and meetings
  • Provide academic advising for new and returning students who may apply to healthcare programs or enroll in healthcare courses not requiring application online and in-person
  • Maintain records of advising sessions and student performance
  • Identify student strengths and weaknesses
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies, healthcare programs, and selective admissions processes
  • Connect students with resources, such as counselors or tutors
  • Meet regularly with the program heads of the healthcare programs to report on student advising and performance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or related experience
  • Commitment to working with diverse colleagues, students, and community members
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity
  • Advising experience at the college level
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate and other educational technologies
  • Understanding of Germanna and VCCS policies, procedures, and resources
  • A desire to help students realize, understand, and reach their educational or career goals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Healthcare experience
