College of the Siskiyou seeks a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, compassionate, caring, and student-centered Mental Health Counselor. Under the supervision of the Vice President of Student Services, the Mental Health Counselor works with faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement a comprehensive behavioral health program at College of the Siskiyous while also supporting community efforts. With the support of the campus community, this position will primarily lead behavioral health initiatives aimed at crisis and behavioral health prevention as well as awareness of behavioral and mental health issues. The Mental Health Counselor will also be responsible for co-chairing the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). This position may also provide crisis intervention and limited therapeutic group and/or one-on-one counseling sessions.

 
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Create marketing and outreach materials in consultation with others to provide awareness and information on behavioral health issues and events.
  • Co-chair or participate in the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at College of the Siskiyous.
  • Implement behavioral and mental health awareness activities and events on campus and in the community.
  • Provide limited opportunities for therapeutic counseling for students and/or provide referrals for students in the community.
  • Respond to student crises and alerts, or concerns on behavioral and mental health issues raised by faculty and staff.
  • Create, in consultation and collaboration, a Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Plan that meets, at a minimum, state and federal mandates.
  • Coordinate training opportunities for faculty and staff on Mental Health/Suicide Prevention.
  • Provide data and general information on types of services provided to students for future planning and implementation of intervention strategies.
  • Provide behavioral and mental health trainings for faculty, staff, and students on a regular basis, including but not limited to convocation and flex training activities.
  • Work with county and community agencies to form partnerships, and to identify and coordinate resources and services for the college.
  • Participate in community advisory groups and events related to behavioral and mental health.
  • Coordinate an annual mental health fair in partnership with Basecamp Basic Needs Resource Center.
  • Collaborate with staff and faculty to integrate and normalize mental health support; spread mental health awareness and ensure best practices are followed when interacting with students.
  • Offer short presentations of services to faculty for students during class time.
  • Prepare and submit an Expenditure and Activity Report annually to the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.
  • Lead the initiative to integrate and weave mental health awareness into the campus culture, including but not limited to having a physical presence in high traffic areas such as the Lodges and the Learning Resource Center, and visiting classes.
  • Participate in college governance by serving on college committees; participate in professional development.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise the operation of mental health-related student activities on campus or virtually.
  • Effectively communicate in a positive manner with segments of the college, including faculty, students, and staff.
  • Develop and implement specific operational goals, both long-term and short-term.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Effectively lead a team of people under pressure of deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Advocate for inclusion and student equity.
  • Commitment to transparency, integrity, collaboration, communication, and ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the community college mission and purpose, high academic standards, and student success.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Master’s degree in a Counseling field or Social Work or related field required and preferred one year of counseling or advising experience, preferably in a school setting or with K-12 or college students in alterative settings. Successful experience working in a diverse and multicultural community. One year of work experience in a college, K-12 school, or social services agency preferred.

Licenses and Certificates Required
License to practice therapeutic counseling in the state of California, i.e. LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, PhD, or PsyD.

  • Ability to support students through challenging and traumatic personal situations, including but not limited to rape, sexually transmitted infections, grief and loss.
