Job Description

Master’s in TESL / TEFL / TESOL with an emphasis on composition, or a Master’s in a related field and 18 graduate hours in TESL / TEFL / TESOL. Experience teaching a full range of ESL courses.

Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and mission of Arizona Western College, as a comprehensive community college. Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students, faculty, and staff from diverse and multi-cultural backgrounds.

Completion of EDU 250—The Community College, within two years of initial employment, or transcript indicating successful completion of a similar course at another college.

Preferred:

Teaching experience at a community college; in a bilingual English/Spanish environment; in online/hybrid/linked courses; the full range of multilingual and/or mainstream English composition courses.

Position Type & Work Schedule:

Accountable for 33 hours per week.

Exempt Position 9-months.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

Faculty members, both full-time and associate, are involved in continuous assessment and engaged in expanding teaching methodologies and delivery systems to improve student academic success and retention. Full-Time faculty will follow an 80-10-10 model, where they actively participate in departmental/divisional meetings and activities, in student recruitment/retention/advisement activities, in community/partner relationships, and in activities that promote and support the district-wide academic goals of the local populations and the College. Faculty may be asked to teach in-person on various campuses, via online/hybrid/linked modalities, as directed by the needs of the community for a given semester; course scheduling may include daytime, evenings, and/or weekends.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Teaching Responsibilities

Serves Students.

Teach 15 equated load hours/semester (to include material and preparation time); grade exams and develop instruments to evaluate student learning and progress; submit student grades/progress as required by the programs/policies of the instructional area.

Maintain a minimum of 5 office hours per week each semester and direct interaction with students in a formal learning environment for a 15-equated load hour schedule.

Remain current in the discipline, updating course content when appropriate. Maintain standard syllabus and course outlines for each course, in accordance with program and procedures. Update course syllabus and outline annually.

Working with the Associate Dean and departmental faculty, develop and implement processes and tools for assessment of teaching and student learning outcomes incorporating appropriate methodologies and technology.

In collaboration with colleagues and the Director of Assessment, Program Review, Curriculum, and Articulation, and under the guidance of the Vice President for Learning Services and the Associate Dean, develop a system for evaluation of teaching and learning, including course competency expectations and student outcome measures.

Working with the Associate Dean, incorporate results of assessments to modify instructions and materials in general education.

Document evidence of student learning by completing the course and/or academic program assessment plans in the institution’s assessment software/application annually.

Collaborate with the Associate Dean and division faculty, the Vice President for Learning Services, and the Direct of Assessment, Program Review, Curriculum, and Articulation, to identify student learning outcomes; develop assessment processes and tools; incorporate results to enhance/modify instruction and materials, degree program, course cluster, and/or certificate program as appropriate.

Work and coordinate with Student Services and the Associate Dean to actively participate in student recruitment, retention, and advisement activities and programs.

Maintain 10 positive interaction hours per week on campus. Attend graduate ceremonies.

Participate in institutional functions, such as but not limited to, college communities, task forces, club sponsorships, facilitation of advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and adjunct faculty. Participation may be directed by the Associate Dean or the Vice President for Learning Services.

Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

Participate in adjunct faculty recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation.

Participate in annual AZTransfer articulation meetings.

Facilitate student transfers to programs with our partner universities, initiating, developing, and modifying 2+2 programs as needed.

Review articulation agreements for concurrent and dual enrollment programs with area high schools.

Community Responsibility

Participate in professional developmental activities outside the College, such as but not limited to, community events, boards, clubs, and conferences. Coordinate such participation with the Associate Dean, as directed by the Vice President for Learning Services, as appropriate.

Serve on local and state advisory committees as directed by the Associate Dean.

Support and participate in strategic initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

College Responsibility

Support and participate in College/Division strategic planning initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
